PDX-LA Area: Any Cheap Fares Left?

I just got a request for next month asking me to be an instructor at an umpire school in San Bernardino the week of June 18th-24th. I've been looking all day at Alaska, USAirways/America West, United, and *twitch* Southwest. I can't find anything under about $315 round trip. USAirways was over $400.

If I'm going to get there cheap, it's beginning to look like I'm going to have to cash in some or close to all of my AS miles. I could cash in 15,000, and get 50% off of a restricted fare. That would set me at a hair under $200. About $182. Or, I could cash in 40,000 for a free ticket. There are no more saver award tickets left into ONT, or LAX, or BUR.

The reason for this, no doubt, is because summer vacation for the kids in Oregon starts the Wednesday before. No doubt all the cheap fares have been snatched up by those who are on their way down to Disneyland, etc. So, the question is...Does anyone know any cheap fares down to So Cal? Long shot, I know, asking around here, but I'd really like to do this. It's a pretty big honor to be asked to go to down as an instructor, and I don't want to pass it up if I don't have to.

I think this is one of those times you have to seriously consider Priceline if price is a factor. Sure you won't earn FF mileage, but I think it's a waste to spend that many miles or dollars for a flight under 1,000 miles each way.

Thats about as low as it;s going for right now and honestly thats about an average fare for mid june. Virtually every school in the state of Oregon, including universities get out that week or the week before that. Also keep in mind that fares are up, airlines are slowly finally realizing that they need to charge fares that they can actually breakeven/make a profit with.

Also, why wouldn;t you use the miles? you;ve got a free ticket, and from the sounds of it the 300 dollar ticket would be a financial burden so why not chash in those miles which you paid nothing for and get a free ticket?

Well...

I'm hesitant because my dad earned a free trip to Chicago in August for his production being so high last year with Coldwell Banker....And he's hinted he wouldn't want to go if I don't go. He doesn't like to travel by himself for trips like that. I'd rather cash in my miles for a free F ticket on AS for the trip.

You could always take Greyhound for $134 roundtrip or Amtrak for $194 round trip.

Also keep in mind that even the $300 r/t flight is less expensive than gas money would be for driving!

Probably. If my car's tank is bone dry, it only takes 30 bucks for regular to fill her up or so.

I may just use 15,000 miles, and get half off a restricted ticket. Or...There is a chance that one of the other guys going down to instruct with me, who was also with me in January when I went down there, and I could get a ride with him down there. He's going down to visit family, and flying home. So, if there is room in the vehicle down there...maybe I could hitch a ride, and fly home one way.

Man I want to know what kind of car you're driving!
at $3.20 per gallon (and even more once you hit california) I can't fill up a Toyota Carolla for less than about $45

Gas is still just under $3 a gallon here where I live  Smile Barely, though. Depending on what station you go to. I'll hopefully find a good deal on airfare. I'll go to Priceline and low ball them at $150 round trip. If they take it, wow. Score. If not...which is what will happen, then oh well.  Smile

Fares out of PDX have steadily increased over the past year or so. The once-plentiful cheap flights to OAK/SFO aren't so plentiful anymore. Loads are up, fuel is up, so fares are up. C'est la vie.

Not sure what part of the Portland Metro area you live in, but here in Inner Northeast Portland, regular is going for $3.08 per gallon as of today.

Well as soon as you cross the border....expect to pay over $3.25 a gallon...and up!

I wonder how much of the high airfares has to do with the Rose Festival winding down?
Most of the events are over, but alot a people who wanted to maybe fly out during the week of the 11th, couldn't, because they would be competing with all the people in town, so they pushed their trips back a week....to the week you want to go.

FYI, I've never found a good airfare to PDX in June.
Couple years ago I got nailed for $358 R/T......from OAKLAND!!!

$340.20 on southwest. Final price you'd pay, but yes this is expensive for SWA. Guess its a high demand market.

Actually, it's kind of interesting because SEA-LAX and PDX-LAX are both huge O&D and connecting markets, but there are only two carriers on the route (UA and AS) with no LCC competition. Granted I think there are plenty of daily flights (especially considering the flights to other LA-area airports), but a few more flights wouldn't hurt. Maybe if F9 is successful with LAX-SFO they'll look into PDX and or SEA.

Umm....Doesn't Southwest fly into LAX??? And I'm pretty sure Southwest has just a few non-stops during the day from both PDX, and SEA...

Nope, on WN you have to connect in CA or NV to get to Southern California from OR and WA.

With the peak summer months coming up and fuel prices the way they are, you are hard pressed to find awesome $150 roundtrip on anything in the 1000 mile range on the West or East coast.

Nope. In fact, WN does not have nonstop service from either city to anywhere in California south of San Jose.

Travelocity - Flexible Dates feature - Frontier round trip $213 available until June 28.

You have to go through DEN, of course, and I think it is sold out for June 11 through 16, but the other June dates appear to be available.

Or - they were five minutes ago.

It's about time airlines raise fares on this route. They been charging sub $200.00 fares for the last decade. As soon as airlines raise the fares to what they should be, people complain about high airfares. Like another person said on this thread, take Greyhound.

I am familliar with the area airports, and which is closer to where I need to be. I just flew this trip in January for the same event.

I won't be renting a car while I'm there. No need to have one. I have a friend down there that could pick me up. However, he lives near San Bernardino, and I don't want to make him drive all the way to LAX, or BUR if it isn't convinient for him. I also still might just drive it. I have family in the bay area. I could break the trip up into two days, and not over stress myself. The pass will be clear by mid-June.

There is a chance that could work. I have to talk with people, see if they are ok with me arriving a day late. I'm sure that will be fine, since there won't be much going on Sunday.

I think I've decided I'm going to drive it.

I have family in Berkeley, so I will break the drive up into two days, and visit with them, and sleep with them for a night, then finish the drive later the next day.

Airfares are just insane. Everyone is between 300 and 500 dollars on this route right now. It's just waaaaaaaaaay too much, and I'm not willing to cash in miles for that short a trip.
