First of all, my apologies for asking this on a site that focuses more on aviation as opposed to "travel", but a lot of people on these forums have impressed me with their knowledge of the industry so I figured you guys might have some interesting insights about these issues.
My situation in a nutshell: I live in NYC and after a trip to GIG I have scheduled for Nov., I will have around 19,000 miles for the year accumulated on CO. (I have over 100K in total since I've joined OnePass but that's through promos, credit cards and a bunch of shorter trips in past years.)
I checked out the CO timetable and after crunching some numbers, I figure a trip to the West Coast can get me the 25K that will qualify me for "Silver Elite" in the OnePass program.
How? By connecting through IAH first.
I'm looking mainly at trips from LGA to OAK via IAH, since just one of those trips can give me the 6K "qualified" miles that I need to get over.
Why LGA and OAK in particular?
Regarding LGA: I've noticed flights from LGA to IAH are cheaper than from the hub at EWR.
Maybe that's because of competition? I suppose airlines can charge more for flights that are "hub-to-hub" for obvious business/economic reasons.
Regarding OAK: Hawaii is overkill. . . and Frisco is about as far west as one can fly from New York while staying within the continental US. But SFO is more expensive to fly to, thus Oakland.
Here's the hat trick I need to pull. My company is not very generous when it comes to sick days and vacation time.
So I would prefer to do this mileage run during the weekend or at most, just using one, ahem, "sick day" on either a Friday or Monday.
Obviously, I would also like to keep the trip as cheap as possible.
So this would be a quick trip to the west coast at best if not a "pure" mileage run, i.e., do some cursory sightseeing in the area, and then head home.
I've seen prices as low as $218 (plus taxes) from LGA to OAK. I am the obsessive type. I can spend days experimenting on the Continental web site looking at combinations of destinations and dates!
. . . So any previous experience and/or advice would be much appreciated!
Even if it's not directly related to my situation, feel free to put your in. All input is welcome and I'm sure will benefit others if not me directly.

I don't have any real advice to offer here, but you may want to consider
1) Seattle...a little further than OAK from IAH if you needed additional miles (or just wanted to get a little further away)
2) Premium fares, like Y and H class... they earn EQMs at a higher rate (150% of flown/credited miles)
3) SkyTeam partners... I don't know what the deal is with CO, but it may be less expensive to fly a SkyTeam partner the same number of miles (for example, Northwest EWR-MSP-SAN or something like that).
Adding in the connection via IAH may screw your goal of doing it in one weekend; I know for example that I can do CLE-LAX non-stop leaving CLE in the evening on Friday and returning Sunday evening without having to screw with my work schedule too much (yeah, ok, so I leave the office a little early), but if I try adding in an IAH connection the extra time involved in the conection makes it not work.

CO is adding capacity on JFK-IAH to compete with B6.. there may be some low fares out of JFK in the near future with the additional seats, but this is purely conjecture on my part. May be something to look at anyway.

I already know Silver Elite is not that much of a big deal. That's why I will only do this if I can cut the costs and the time required to a bare minimum.
As for saving my money, I live and work in NYC. You can spend $300+ on an evening out or even on just a bottle of liquor in some of the "cooler" nightspots.
I am not a big spender like that but I do have some money to burn (no wife or kids to support thank God!).
$250 on a plane ticket is not a lot of money for me. Also, I've never been to the West Coast before so I wouldn't mind a cheap weekend trip to Frisco or Seattle.

One other possibility is to sign up for Continental.com e-mail specials. They come once a week and have tons of fares ranging from $99 roundtrip up through several hundred dollars, depending on distance. These are last minute.. you can fly out on Saturday and back on Monday. Keep an eye on these-- sometimes they come out with some pretty cool destinations, some of which could definately get you 6K miles w/ connections.
