Midwest Airlines = Amazing Service

Well, in light of that negative Spirit Airlines thread, I figured that we could all have a positive reflection today on one of North America's best carriers, Midwest Airlines (oh yea, and Midwest Connect too!). Today, YX flight 831 PHX-MKE was in trouble. The scheduled (Saver Service MD-8(7?)) aircraft had severe mechanical problems. Most other airlines would have said, "Too bad, so sad" but Midwest is a class act. They offered 2 no-strings-attatched round-trip flights per person willing to bump to a later flight (I unfortunately could not take this offer). Not only did they replace the aircraft within a respectable time frame, but they replaced it with an unforgettable aircraft. They replaced their nice, but not as nice Saver Service flight with their Milwaukee Brewer's charter MD-8(1?) with only(!!!) 74 seats. The comfort was unbelievable and the legroom was far beyond the likes of NW or AA F classes! I had one of the most comfortable flights of my life and by far one of the friendliest. Thank you Midwest Airlines!

Anyone else have good experiences/stories from YX?

Yup, they are a wonderful airline! I love their 717 aircraft and signuture service, I fly them whenever I'm travelling domestically within the states. I truly hope the rumours aren't true about changing the configuration of its 717 aircraft. Oh well, I guess profitability is what really matters in the end.

The brewers/bucks charter plane is a great piece of metal. Did you by chance get to sit in one of the backwards facing seats?

Nah, but that is ok, I used to do it all the time when WN had that and I used to fly them. I am actaully sort of glad I didn't because I wanted my under-seat storage!  Wink LOL.

Many...but not in their Saver Service which is undependable, as your story illustrates. Now Signature Service: that is something to behold!

I flew on the Charter config MD-81 last summer EWR - MKE when our 717 had mechanical problems. It was an extremely comfortable aircraft and the rear facing seats with tables were weird. I enjoyed it so much I'm flying YX next Web EWR-MKE-MCI-SAT. Can't wait !

Yes, if for leisure. No if for business. I go to LAS, PHX and TPA on business from MKE a lot. I gave up YX and Saver in the Spring. Too many two to four hour delays.

And I did go to NW. I am now Gold Elite, get upgraded constantly..something that can't happen on Saver...and have never been delayed by a mechanical since (don't count weather.)

Now I get to these places ON TIME. Sorry, until they replace the MD80s...and they are working on that...I avoid Saver. I love to fly Signature to MCI, DFW or anywhere else it goes. Just not the very undependable Saver.

How could that be a good story?!?!? You were stuck in PHX for a few hours. I wouldn't call an airplane breaking down a good thing.

The fact that they took the time to be able to accommodate us best and then when they could not accommodate everyone, offered excellent care packages. Any other airline would have not only fumbled, but probably would have left us there for several hours. We were only there for about 2 extra, and that is really not that bad. I think the situation could have been much worse and they went above and beyond our expectations when we heard there would be a delay.

No, but their customer service recovery was excellent!

I wish they would give you the option on all their destinations! Can't they do one Saver Service flight and one Signature Service flight to PHX? Or 2 SVR and 1 SIG? Ugh, I LOVE their Signature Service.

Wait a sec, I am confused.

The OP said the Saver Service PHX-MKE was more or less "severe mechanical."

Did YX happen to have the charter configured A/C sitting around at PHX? Or did you have to wait for the A/C to be flown in from somewhere?

love yx, rumors here have been they might do away with sign service but I can not imagine that, it is amazing, nice ff program too you can use the points less than 330 days out.

as for nw gold elite, what great benefits are there? I was for two years and the upgrade is nice but the risk of sitting nw coach is not worth it.

plus yx people are very helpful as your story points out.

To me, the coach seats in Saver and NW coach are the same. So that is a wash. The advantages are:

-Possibility of 1st when that does not exist on Saver.
-No mechanical delays...in my experience.
-More flight options.
-Did I mention the 1st class thing...

The downside:

-No choclate chip cookies.
-No very good buy-on board meals if traveling NW coach.

I get to fly Midwest for the first time in alittle less than two weeks. Unfortunately its from MSP to PIT so I only get the signature service for one 1-hour flight each way. My first flight is also at 6:00 so I won't get the chocolate chip cookies damnit!!! All that aside I am still excited as I have been meaning to fly them ever since they started the 717s in MSP. They also fly out the the newer HHH terminal which is very nice, small, and easy to get in and out of.

nw first class is like signtiture domestically, nw has more leg room,
good news, you can earn NW miles on yx now (best of both worlds)

I fly midwest rather often and I have never had any overly long delays, like more then 20min. I fly saver service more often than signature service. I have never had the delays you speak of. what kind of problems are they, are they like engines not working properly or what I don't understand.

I have never flown Midwest, but I would much rather take them than NW, AA, or UA "anyday." From the Midwest website:

Quote:
Both Saver and Signature flights provide passengers with extra legroom for added comfort. Pitch (the distance between seats) averages 33-34", depending on aircraft type - significantly more than the 30" most airlines average in coach class. The interior width of seat cushions on Midwest aircraft is 18" on Saver flights and 21" on Signature flights, compared with coach seating that is 17-18" wide on most airlines.

I would much rather fly Midwest because of this. This is definitely better than coach on NW, AA, and UA. Perhaps their FF mile program isn't up to par like NW's is (as some of you have mentioned) but because of their outstanding service ... YX would be my choice. Midwest's Saver Service is still much better than NW coach. Here:

**Saver Service, with low fares and extra legroom, offers year-round nonstop flights from Milwaukee to seven leisure destinations – Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Tampa, Orlando, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix.

Saver Service offers simplified low fares, no Saturday-night stayover, a minimal ticket exchange fee – and the same great service that has earned Midwest Airlines its reputation for providing “the best care in the air.”

All flights are aboard MD-80 series jets with standard coach seating arranged in a 2-by-3 configuration. Midwest adds extra space between rows to ensure generous legroom.

Saver Service flights offer Best Care Cuisine – our buy-onboard dining service. Flights of 2-1/2 hours or more also offer onboard entertainment – the rental of digEplayers for $10. These are handheld entertainment units preloaded with 11 movies, TV shows, cartoons and musical selections.**

** Also taken from Midwest Airlines.com

Even though you can buy your food, I am sure it is much better than those soggy meals you can purchase on NW.

Good on ya! They are not delayed every day...just a lot in MY experience. I have to be there, when I have to be there. And for me the delays were frustrating and costing me business. thus the switch from Saver. I am glad you have not had delays.

Websites are marketing tools. Words are words. From the web site I would fly them too on Saver if I did not have to be in PHX, LAS, and TPA in a timely fashion.

No meals on NW coach.

YX is my hometown airline. I like them. I LOVE Signature service and encourage anyone out there to take that service anytime they get the chance. It is a very nice ride for just a little more than coach.

I just can not depend on Saver Service. Simple as that. When they upgrade the planes and get more dependable, i would even think about coming back.

Look for an announcement this fall regarding the replacement of the MD80/Saver Service program. Looks as if the seating will be a signature/saver mix. (maybe 8-12 sig seats in front) Leaning towards Airbus for supplier.
