Most of us still feel how impressive the 747 is, myself although I don't see many 747 at LIS we still have a few days a week a TAAG one, and even if I've seen the plane many times I still stop and watch it. That brings my memories back to the good old days when I remember spotting any of the 747's that I'm sharing now with you. What I wanted to show on this selection was the old liveries all these 747's had, all of them incredibly beautifull and very nostalgic indeed ( well at least for me.....). I ask you to see some of them that are absolutely stricking, like the old SABENA one, IBERIA, TAP, KLM and AER LINGUS...of course you can connect with others....but if I had to gie a prize the SABENA one is the most beautifull!!!

Well, I didn't knew that...so maybe my personal tribute to you too!!! But you must agree that back to those days the airlines that used the 747 had indeed great liveries right??? Now we have a different way of painting the 747...I don't know!

Ah yeah, the days where financials, oil and terrorism, while exisiting, were nowhere near as big of a factor as they are these days. Can't remember much from my 747 flights other than that all of them were onboard KLM 742s, all headed to ATL.

What do I think about these early 747s? Good memories, Out of the above, I have been on AC BA KL LH PA QF SA and TW (which was the very first 747 flight in 1970) and that does not count the SP, 743 and 744 flights and other operators.
Still my favorite plane and the 380 won't change that.

Great collection. Thanks for sharing. I'm flying my first 747 this December from Sao Paulo to London. I had always hoped to fly one between Brasil and the USA but United quite flying them as did Varig. I'm looking forward to my trip, not for London so much as the 747. My family thinks I'm nuts!

YYZYYT, I'm really sorry that I forgot the good old CPAir!!! That's a "tragic" mistake specially taking in mind that I'm portuguese and CP Air was part of our past for many and good years!!! Thanks also for your photos, I wanted to put Alitalia 747 but with the previous livery:
Like the above DC-8-43, I know I saw many years ago a photo of a 747 in those colours, I think it was on a Boeing pre-delivery photo, it's a pitty there's none in A.Net yet!!!
Here goes some more from those times:

I would have to go with SAA for various reasons, it was on SA that I had my first 747 flight waaaaaay back in 1972 and the airline on which I have had the most jumbo experiences. 742, 743, 744, SP over the years and all except one (the most recent) without any technical snags.

I also flew SAA once but not from Portugal to South Africa, actually I flew it from ATH to LIS. That was back in 1983 and in those years SAA had traffic rights to operate flights from LIS to ATH and also to FCO! I flew on good old ZS-SAO, I know that this "old lady" recently was broken-up, and SAA had such a great service on board. The only thing I regret is the fact that my flight from LIS to ATH was supposed to be flown on a SAA 747SP, but we lost the plane and had to redirect our trip from LIS to FCO ( CS-TEM 737-282 Advanced from TAP, and then FCO to ATH on I-DIRG, Alitalia 727-200 Advanced )! That was how close I was to fly in a SAA 747SP....after that, I never got that close again to fly the SP!!! And surely we miss SAA here at LIS!

The B747 is a beautiful plane, especially the early models. The B741 and B742. Incidentally, those are the only ones I've flown with
I want to try the B743 and B744, but for some reason I haven't had the chance yet. I think the nostalgic value of a B741/B742 is immense. It is like stepping into history. Suddenly you've entered the 1970s!
Thanks for sharing those beautiful pictures CV990! The old 74s are one of the best looking birds in the sky.

Hey CV990- what awesome pics of those classic bygone B747 colour schemes.
Pure nostalgia!! I remember our stopovers in Lisboa, with traffic rights to FCO or ATH. Lisboa was a very popular stopover amongst the SAA crew, especially in summer, for the fantastic food, wine & beaches. Used to party up a storm with the KLM DC-10 outbound crews to Caracas. Man do I miss the place.

Great 747 pics a real blast from the past, a bit more classy than the modern
day white colour schemes airlines seem to go for. My first 747 flight was on
the Aer Lingus one pictured,as a ten year old at the time i was amazed by
this king of the skies.
