The top-ranked airline in last year's survey has held on to its preeminent place. American Airlines, the world's largest carrier, an indisputable victory in categorizing it as the best airline operating in Latin America. For 14 years, American has offered more flights to more destinations than any other airline in the region. The behemoth carrier launched its Latin American service in 1941 when it made its first flight to Mexico. Its South American debut came in 1987 with service to Caracas.

Today, American's route system in Latin America covers 34 cities in 18 countries. The carrier maintains that it will continue its commitment to the region and, indeed, nearly 100% of the 6,200 employees in its division in the region are from Latin America.

American Airlines may be this year's winner, but its future projects indicate that it won't be resting on its laurels in the highly competitive aviation world. American is developing a large new world terminal at its Miami gateway and vows that it will keep the globe's most modern air fleet as a key force in Latin America.

It's no surprise that AA is considered to be the best out of all the Latin American airlines; many of them are extremely disorganized and unreliable. CO is becoming another dominant US carrier in the region, and I think that they, along with AA, are the two most stable carriers in Latin America.

From what we hear in New Zealand, LAN Chile is the airline to watch and the one I'd prefer to fly to South America on from New Zealand. In fact, I'm doing so in October!

LAN without doubt. No one represents Latin American warmth and friendship better than LAN.

I would vote LAN as well, but I would not look down on AA at all. If the FTAA goes through(And it probably will), Miami will become even more of an economic hub for the Americas than it already is, and with AAs knowledge and commitment to Latin America this could not only increase the size and scope of their route map but perhaps it could also make the service more Latin and less AA benign.

Watch out for MX, CO, and a few others.

Obviously my vote goes for LAN CHILE.

Lan has been chosen several times the best airline for Latin America to USA by the Official Airline Guide, among many other polls among frequent flyers.
But I have to be fair: LAN has improved a lot its service after the codesharing with American Airlines, especially for the US market.
I think LAN wouldn't be as successfully if it wasn't for the One World Alliance and everything.
Hey Motorhussy, do you have already a plan for your Aventura Sudamericana? what countries are you planning to visit?

Saludos )( Arcano

Copa, Taca, Varig, etc all have more charm than AA for sure. I would rank Copa and Taca right up there with AA for everything except arrogance where AA currently has that won hands down. Continental would probably swipe the prize in a minute if they had more stations in the deep south.

"Top-ranked" is vague, it can mean anything. "Top-ranked" in terms of what!
I guess AA is more visible due to its sheer size and its daily presence in almost all capital / metropolitan cities of Latin America. But in terms of service, I think other airlines are much better: I mention TAM, LAN, Copa and Mexicana!! From the US, I think Continental is better too, but they have less services to Latin America.

Only you didn't understand the meaning of "Top-ranked", and in addition call it "vague". Apparently most of the people don't agree with you here.

By the way, in terms of "service" Lan is better than any other carrier in Latin America and you didn't mention it!

Lacsa A320: let me explain:

"ranking" is a relative exercise. So, "ranking" is in terms of something. For instance:
*passenger numbers
*number of daily/weekly flights
*number of destinations served
*customer service (using polls, obviously)
*on-time performance
*average age of aircraft
*etc etc.

Just "top-ranked" doesn´t mean anything to me; I need "top ranked" in terms of something... Now the original message seems to relate mostly to the number of destinations served. But later replies seem to refer to customer service...

As long as I understand, this is a result in general of various factors taken in a poll for an award. And maybe, as many of them, means nothing. I have my own conclusions, so make yours...
