Northwest Air Cutting 4,900 Jobs
Friday March 21, 4:03 pm ET

ST. PAUL (Reuters) - Northwest Airlines Corp. (NasdaqNM:NWAC - News) on Friday said it was cutting 4,900 jobs and its flight schedule by 12 percent because of lower travel demand before and following the conflict in Iraq.
"The carrier is taking this action because of a drop in passenger demand due to both the threat of and now the commencement of hostilities with Iraq," the airline said in a statement.

About 20 planes will be removed from service. The schedule changes will affect North American, Asia/Pacific and European routes.

Anybody keeping a tab on how many employees in the aviation sector will lose their jobs because of the war? 4000 at Northwest, along with a few thousand more at United, and was it 1200 at Continental? This is excluding Air Canada and other non-US carriers.

The industry analysts warned that 70,000 industry jobs might be lost during the war. Let's hope they were wrong.

I've heard the same numbers.

What we have to remember is that the well-run airlines (Southwest, Jet Blue, Air Tran, Westjet in Canada) are adding employees. It shows that money can be made even in these tough times.

Now that the other thread was deleted...

The 20 aircraft being parked (stored, not retired) include a mix of:

DC-9
A320
757-200
DC-10-30
747-200

Also, NW 41/42, the AMS-BOM leg has been suspended for the time being due to the war. The MSP-AMS leg will continue to operate with a DC-10-30

AA is going through voluntary options right now for agents, support staff, and management and they haven't said yet how many are expected to go during this 4th wave of layoffs.

Having been laid-off after the major cuts in 2001, recalled after 2 months, made it through 2 waves of layoffs since, I think my luck has ended. Won't know until April.  Sad

Oh thats a good move, not. They can't afford to pay employees but they are going to spend millions on repainting aircraft in their new scheme.

Oh and don't forget executive bonuses, to maintain "quality LEADERSHIP". Remember, they cut millions off the payroll, so they deserve to be rewarded for saving the company... with those same millions of dollars they saved!

I don't know about everyone else, but I feel it is grandiose when people call themselves "leaders" like that. That is on par with calling yourself "god" or "the one who is worshipped". After all, these people are "LEADERS" since they put themselves above their employees, not with them when it comes to running a viable operation. I see a lot of bossing around and barking of orders that these "leaders" would never do themselves personally, that is not leadership. That's just being bossy.
