The Tomato Juice was a GREAT one but here is another drink that people LOVE to get on planes.....GINGER ALE! Now when do people drink ginger ale on the ground (besides when you have an upset stomach)  Smile

I love it though!..this threat has NO negative tone from me! I enjoy serving ginger ale and tomato juice

Maybe that is the exact reason: To prevent an upset stomach!

I think the main reason is that it's one of those drinks that just never occur to you as a choice until you SEE it sitting on the cart.

Most people have their "usual" drinks for on the ground, but those are the ones commonly offered in vending machines...and ginger ale is usually not one of those! So, when you see it on the cart coming down the aisle, you think, "Damn, that sounds pretty good!"  Big grin

I think EA CO AS hit the nail on the head. My beverage of preference onboard aircraft is definitely ginger ale. Up until somewhat recently, I would usually have Sprite or 7-Up, but I decided to try the Canada Dry Ginger Ale, as it's not common on the ground and I couldn't remember the last time I tried it. From then on, ginger ale has been my drink of choice. I also like that the beverage does not contain caffinee, and also contains a slightly less calories and sugar than do most sodas.

Ginger ale doesn't have a stomach calming effect on me. I might as well be drinking syrup of ipecac. *IF* I can swallow it without gagging I'll vomit once it hits bottom.

For me, at home, ginger ale and root beer are the two most consumed soda's...I alternate bottles of each....but "up there", I get cranberry juice or apple juice if possible...or ginger ale!

It may have something to do with the fact that taste changes at altitude? Best SWAG (Scientific Wild-A$$ Guess) I can give it!

SWALUVFA,

I enjoy serving ginger ale and tomato juice

So, what you're really trying to say is that you hate serving Coke, Pepsi, 7-Up and Sprite? How dare you attack institutions like that?  Big grin < sarcasm off >

Ginger Ale is perfect if you want to take a nap after having your drink. It's my favorite, and I prefer Canada Dry rather than Schweppes!!!!

For me, 2 reasons.....

1) Ginger Ale gives me less gas than Coke etc. And I think we all know what it's like to be gassy in an area as small and intimate as a plane (shudder, memories of an EMB120 flight come rushing back).

2) I think it just plain tastes nicer. I stopped drinking most fizzy drinks a long time ago, and trying them again now is just puke-inducing. It's like giving up McDonalds for 6 months and then going back to it. You start to realise how unpleasant it really is.

All in all, go the Ale! My favourite.

Also, ginger ale is generally not available at fast-food outlets. BTW, why does Diet Coke fizz up so f++king much?! I can pour four other soft drinks while waiting for the Diet Coke foam to subside. It makes a mess on the cart, too. Diet Sprite and Vanilla Coke fizz up alot but calm down right away. For all you passengers out there: you're more likely to get a whole can without asking for it if you order Diet Coke because we just don't have time to fool with it. Big grin

Canada Dry is actually owned by Dr Pepper/SevenUp, a very American corporation, so you'll have to save a cross-border spat for something else!

For some reason I tend to go towards tomato juice on planes. Never touch the stuff on the ground.

Ginger capsules work wonders for motion sickness. I don't know if there really is any "ginger" in ginger ale, but I would agree with the theory that it's orderd because people are wanting to avoid motion sickness.

For me the one and only favourite drink onboard is Gin Tonic or Gin Bitter!  Big grin I just have to get one when I'm flying.

Well, there WAS ginger in ginger ale when it was conceived.

Now, my guess is that its the artificial flavor of ginger.

For those in major US metro areas - go to a Big Bowl and order a fresh ginger soda. They make it right then and there, and it has a strong, spicy ginger flavor. You'll really enjoy it.

Oh, and I too almost always order ginger ale on airplanes.

I am a big ginger ale fanatic to begin with, and if they served Fresca on planes I'd get that too. Ginger Ale is pretty light and non-caffinated so it is not a bad choice on the plane. Plus it is just slightly sweet (at least the Canada Dry stuff is, Schweeps is a tad bit dryer).

Redngold hit the nail...

The last thing I want to do on airplanes is drink something with alcohol or caffeine in it (espp long haul) and worsen the dehydration.

So the non-caffeinated drinks are the only choice - and I'd rather have ginger ale than 7up/sprite.

Donreith;

I think Coca-Cola makes Canada Dry Ginger Ale, since it is carried on airlines who use food service that have coke contracts.

Correct me if I am wrong....

I to usually opt for a Canada Dry Ginger Ale when flying and I thought I was in the vast minority.

I always get ginger ale with a lime when I fly. Gigneil: you are right, Big Bowl does have the best ginger soda. They were the ones who got me started on the lime and ginger ale combo.

Mix half Bacardi Limon with half ginger ale over ice, add lime and a little cranberry juice...et voila! One helluva good drink...La Bebida Sin Nombre.

I always wondered this myself, and I'm really happy that someone asked this lol.. I think that it is great, and I ALWAYS have it on flights, and on the ground as well. I'll be sitting there on the couch eating peanuts and ginger ale, and if i sit up and turn my head to my left or right as if to look out a window, I'll get that same (well, not quite) feeling of being on a plane.

 Smile

Interesting topic. It is true though as I often select ginger ale when flying but hardly drink it on the ground. Back in Trinidad Canada Dry is widely sold but here in the UK, while ginger ale is easily available, in most supermarkets it is hidden away by the liquor and is not usually placed with other soft drinks. It just does not seem to be promoted as much in the general market. That is unfortunate as ginger ale is truly a hidden gem of a drink.
