Topic: Why Don't UA's 747-400's Have PTV's In Y?

Does anyone know why PTV's were never installed in Economy on United's 744 aircraft? I thought I recalled reading somewhere that they were going to be installed, and I thought they were until a Dec. 2002 trip to DEN alongside reading it at http://www.seatguru.com/united/B744.shtml. I know there's reason that the Triple 7's have them because they were delivered new with them, but UA installed PTV's in coach on their international 767-300/ER's, didn't they? Any info would be appreciated-thanks.

UA had plans to install PTVs in their B744, but for some reason, making sure they have enough money to meet their payroll seems more important than making sure they have enough money to install PTVs these days. Odd, huh?

Didn't UA take all the PTVs out of the 777s as well?

Not all the B777 had PTVs...

B777's in domestic configuration (used mostly on Hawaii routes) do not have PTV's, but internationally-configured aircraft do.

Not all internationally-configured B777 have PTVs - there's been numerous reports of B777 on such routes as SFO-LHR that didn't have PTVs... the domestic B777 rarely fly to Hawaii anymore :-(.

All of our 3-class B777s have PTVs throughout. There are no exceptions.

The 2-class B777 "XA" aircraft routinely fly to Hawaii. This month's B777 Hawaii flights are: DEN-HNL, 1 SFO-OGG, and 2 SFO-HNL flights.

The decision not to add PTVs in the B744's Economy classes was "finalized" in 2000, due to cost cuts. I haven't heard of plans to add them, unfortunately. ...Speaking of the B744, rumor has it that we will reinstate the ORD-HNL nonstop with this plane later this year.

You’re right – I’m thinking of E+ rather than PTV (it’s late)… but the B777 are flying less-and-less to Hawaii compared to what they use to.

UA employees have been flirting with the rumor of the return of ORD-HNL service for almost a year … according to the rumor, UA will upgrade HNL-NRT back to the B744 and then retime the flight so the aircraft from ORD can continue onto NRT… IMO, I doubt it will happen. But we can dream!

boy i wish their 744s had ptv's. last summer i flew ual 744 service sfo-pvg (shanghai). it was nice in that it was nonstop on an airline i trust, but the flight left something to be desired. old seats with no headrests, dirty plane, no ptv, those annoying rubber-tube headsets, horrible food...i knew i was safe, so i took ual, but i can only imagine how nice the flight would have been if the us-china bilateral agreement allowed more competition. throw aa, continental, and delta in their and perhaps the flight would be more enjoyable. and, gauging by the price of the flight, and the load factor, i'm sure there is demand there.

Theoretically that would make the most sense however that would dramatically derease the amount of capacity controlled space for award travel for the ORD-HNL leg. Also, I'm sure that it would be marketed as a ORD-NRT flight with a stopover at HNL (same flight #). I doubt this will happen as well since it seems like UA's ORD-NRT direct flights are pretty set and also very popular among high-revenue passengers. Attempting to mix and match a proposed ORD-HNL route would just complicate an already established existing routing scheme.

Capt078:

You flew with us to PVG last summer? Could it have been more like 10 years ago??

The seats on our B744s have had the winged headrests for at least 7 years now, and we've -never- used "rubber headsets" on the B744! ...Now as for the quality of the food, the cleanliness of the airplane, and the lack of PTV: I do apologize! I hope you'll find at least 2 of those 3 shortcomings have improved the next time you fly with us.
