I was glancing at Swiss International's website, particularly their fleet, and following up on a couple of other threads, I've got a couple of questions:

1) from the photo file here, it looks like they've currently got 1 A340. Which route is it currently flying?

2) how quickly will they be receiving the other 12 340's?

3) are the 340's replacing the MD-11's, or is it a capacity increase issue?

4) will all the MD-11's be returned to their lessors?...as 340's are added?

1) At the moment they only have 1 A340, the next 2 deliveries are delayed.

3) They are replacing the MD11 with A340s

2) They are now only scheduled to get 9 343s (instead of the original 12) - supposed to be deliveredby next summer

SWISS A 340s too are serving KHI and will be used on BKK-SIN-HKG-MNL routes too.

Hi!

If you go to SWISS homepage and check in the front page the option "Destination Excelence" you can actually see all information regarding the 343 of SWISS including the schedule of the 343 and how it's gonna be when the rest of them starts to arrive. You can also the interior of the plane with a virtual visit of all 3 classes, actually it's really nice to see the plane. At this moment only HB-JMA is flying, in the end of this months JMB and JMC will arrive to start services in the first days of October. Then as long as other 343's are delivered more and more flights will be operated by it and of course more and more MD11 will be wfu. At this moment I think HB-IWB and IWD are wfu and there are rumours that they will go to Varig, with these two HB-IWM will go too but I've been seen pictures of it lately so I don't know about this one.
Regards

Based on the 343 deployment information on their web page, they will be fully utilizing all of their 343s on a daily basis with no spares (for any mechanical situations). For example, by next June when all 9 are delivered, the utilization will look something like this:
BKK/SIN/TLV (2)
HKG (2)
JNB/CAI (2)
JFK (1)
LAX (1)
NRT (1)

Notice that EZE/GRU is not on the list for the 343s even though it's currently being served by the MD11 - the schedule currently still shows the M11 on that route for next summer.
Another curious thing is introducing the 343 on a route they will be cancelling with the winter schedule (Accra/Lagos)

Overall, with their stated goal of having a total of 18 long-haul a/c (9 A340s and 9 A330s), I still don't understand how they will be able to operate to all of the long-haul destinations they say they will after the capacity reduction this coming winter. The remaining long-haul routes are:
ZRH-BOS (1 A330)
ZRH-MIA (1 A330)
ZRH-EWR (1 A330)
GVA-JFK (1 A330)
ZRH-YUL (1 A330)
ZRH-BOM (1 A330)
ZRH-IAD (1 A330)
ZRH-NBO-DAR/Yaounde/Malabo (1 A330)
ZRH-DXB-KHI/MCT (1 A330)
ZRH-GRU-EZE (???) which based on a daily night flight both ways would require 2 a/c.

Excluding the ZRH-GRU-EZE, that's 9 343s and 9 332s operating just about every day with no spares...very tight

As for the MD11s, both IWB and IWD have been removed from the fleet. I saw IWB (the "blue belly" a/c) at ZRH the other day at the remote hangar area with the "swiss" titles already removed.

HB-IWM will go too but I've been seen pictures of it lately so I don't know about this one.

IWM is wfu and inside the hangar without titles. IWB and IWD are parked outside the hangars without any titles or logos.

Hi Unique!

Thanks a lot for the information, so IWM is indeed out of service, Varig too?

So is ORD gonna stick with the A330/MD-11 (not the MD-11 anymore i dont think) or are we gonna see the A340? Thanks

Hi!

In the SWISS homepage in USA LAX and JFK are the only ones that will get the 343. LAX will be the first starting late November ( 6 times a week ), JFK from ZRH ( 6 times ) and JFK from GVA ( 1 time ) from 20th. December and finnally from the 5th. January 2004 LAX will pass from 6 to 7 times a week. I do think that the flights to JFK sometimes will be operated by the 332 and I also think that ORD and BOS will have the chance to see once a while the 343.

Hi,

GIG is cancelled from October onwards, GRU & EZE from next Summer on... too bad they're dropping South America at all. Big mistake in my humble opinion, as cargo and pax figures (& ticket prices) have always been high on these routes.

..., Varig too?

Actually, what is being told in Brazil is that VRG is going to keep the MD11's on the US market routes, while the TAM 332's are going to serve the european market. The 763's are not yet clear where to be deployed, most possibly South/Central America's & Portugal.

Gents, 2nd A340 of Swiss International, HB-JMB, will be doing training flights to Chateauroux and is planned to leave ZRH on Saturday, 4th October at 07.45 hrs, returning at 14.00 hrs.

MD-11 HB-IWM, withdrawn from use and all white, is doing a check flight ex ZRH tomorrow, 2nd October.

Just thought some might be interested to know...

Hi!

Well looks like we have a 2nd. SWISS 343 comming in! Now that SWISS wfu 3 MD11's this means that in the future any additional 343 will have a MD11 beeing retired right? Next 343 should be arriving soon too! It's going to be interesting how the panorama of SWISS airliners will change in months, the MD11 fading out and the 343 getting in!
regards

They'll soon have a little oneworld sticker on the side too!

I love the A340's - it is my plane of preference for longhaul - albeit a little slower, and doesn't climb as fast - but the layout, and thinner cross section are super!

I understand that Swiss have got a new version of the A343, with enhanced engines, however the airbus website does not give away any info.

Does anyone know how the Swiss A343's differ in performance to those of say Virgin or Lufthansa?

Thanks in advance.

Rich.

Airbus developped a new A343 version, also dubbed the "A340-300 Enhanced". Amongst others, new avionics, a new cabin layout (new overhead bins) and - above all - a new version of the CFM56 engines were introduced, the CFM56-5C/P.

The first aircraft with this new engine will be the first A343 delivered to SAA early next year. From then on, every A343 will be fiited with this new engine. For older engines, there's an upgrade package. More about this engine at:
http://www.cfm56.com/news/press/cfm03-11.htm

LX has (or at least had) the retrofit as part of the purchase deal, AFAIK. So, the engines on the 7 A343 delivered to LX this year will (probably) be upgraded to the new engine version.

The new engine should provide 1% less fuel consumption and longer maintenance cycles.

That's all I can remember right now.

Cheers
Gerardo
