We are quite close to the end of this year, and its nice to read this among all the economic gloom. There has never been a year with less airliner accidents. Hope it stays that way.

I thought about the issue only two days ago when talking to a relative who is afraid of flying. Indeed 2003 is a very safe year so far, let's hope we won't see the record destroyed...

No other way to ensure crashes than jinxing it like that by saying this is the safest year! 2 months to go!

I hate these threads, almost everytime we have one, there is a crash or two in the near future. Can't remember who it was last year, but someone on here posted a similar message, and then a plane went down the next day. I suggest we delete the thread and unjinx it

Yea, I agree w/ Artsyman. It's like someone saying something like that on September 10, 2001. Besides, wasn't 2002 a safer year than 2003 has been so far? At least in the states in 2002 there wasn't a single airline fatality; however there have been a couple B1900s lost this year.

Nope, AA lost that A300 in Nov. after departure from JFK. Havent heard of any thus far. This might be like in baseball, its the 9th inning, 2 outs and somebody leans over to you and says hey! the pitcher is throwing a no hitter.....and on the next pitch he gives up a hit....

The AA A300 crash was in November 2001, not last year...the JFK-SDQ flight... I think in the US/for US based carriers 2002 was accident free...

Thanks Fjnovak1, I had a brain fart.....your right, 2002 was accident free for U.S. carriers

"SHUTOUT" SHUTOUT" SHUTOUT" common people, its superstition, not a hockey game! The reason that I think of having a safe year is better and more hard pressed maintenance and servicing.......Along with stricter FAA rules and regulations. If a goalie is going to get a shut out he's going to get a shut out, if a plane crashes (god forbid!) then its going to crash, not because of superstition but because off poor maintenance or weather.......Just one persons opinion, don't take it to seriously  Big grin

Best regards,

While the 1900 crash in Charlotte was a codeshare operator, it was still a part 121 air carrier operation. Still counts unfortunately.

Despite that, and despite 9/11, the last few years have been remarkably good. I think that is a testemant to the safety culture within the industry. As technology advances, and we learn from our mistakes the airline industry constantly becomes more and more aware of any problems and learns how to tackle them, or see them before they arise.

I only hope that safety isn't comprimised by airlines trying to lower the bottom line.
