Topic: NW 747-400 Economy Seating Refit?

I know that they are installing the new World Business Class seats in their 747-400s.

I am also aware that they have opted not to retrofit the economy class with PTVs/IFE system.

However, I was wondering if they are replacing the fabric on their 747-400 economy seats to match that of the A330-300 economy seats.

Please, please tell me this is the case. I have stated many a time on this forum that Northwest has the most bizarre, ugly fabric on its cabin seats.

We've had the same colored seating since 1989. We've stuck with it because it hides stains so well.

NW has plans to, but not until the industry rebounds... now's not the time to replace seats because the fabric's "ugly." NW will be taking delivery of only A330 next year, when A319/A320 deliveries resume in 2004, I believe they'll have the A330-style seating...

I am not saying they should replace the seats.

I am simply saying replace the fabric to match that of the fabric on the WBC seats. At least on the 747-400s, which are the flagships of the fleet and at least on the international flights.

I am quite aware of the financial situation at Northwest. At the same time however, they are spending quite a bit of money on those new World Business Class seats. I did a market analysis on the passenger seat market in 2001, so I am well aware at how expensive those lie-flat seats are.

I would assume that these aircraft are being repainted during regular maintenance periods so the fabric in the economy class is likely to be changed regularly in order to address wear and tear.

I believe a swith to a simple, dark blue fabric with a less severe pattern would perform just as well in terms of hiding wear and tear and staining.

Also, NW has not had the same fabric since 1989. I flew Northwest repeatedly in the early 1990s, on brand new 757s and A320s nonetheless, and the aircraft all had very different, maroon/red fabric scheme.

Indeed, there is a picture of a Northwest 747-400 interior on airliners.net taken in the mid-1990s that has the pre-blue/black/grey striped seating colors.

What I believe you meant to say is that Northwest has had the same exterior livery (until its recent livery change) since 1989.

TranStar,
No, Jetjack74 is correct -- NW introduced new interior colors in 1989... since NW was strapped for cash back then, it took many years for each aircraft to receive them (early B744 deliveries weren't reconfigured until circa 1994-1995).

Aircraft seats are replaced about once every ten years... the A319/A320, B757 ships 56XX, B753, A333, DC-10-30 (delivered second hand to NW 1991-2000) and most B744 have the same seats today that they were delivered with. B757 ships 55XX and early B744 received the standard interior in the mid 1990s, the DC-9 received new seats when they received new interiors in the mid-to-late 1990s.

NW is NOT replacing the seats in their aircraft as they're repainted... as I've said before, NW is taking delivery of only A330 next year... in 2005, new A319/A320 deliveries should have the new colors.

Again, I am not saying seat replacement. I am saying seat fabric replacement.

There is a big difference.

Seat fabric replacement must occur much more frequently than entire seat replacement.

Slightly off the topic, but better than starting a new thread I guess... how many A330s is NW getting next year... and any rough estimates as to when?

NW's getting 4 A332 and 3 A333 in 2004 and 3 A332 and 3 A333 in 2005... word is the company may try to expedite delivery of some aircraft should they choose to operate PDX-NRT...
