Hi all,

I have a question, when you guys travel on planes and you take your camera along with you, do you carry it on in hand, in its case or in your hand luggage?

If I was to put it in my hand luggage, and before the plane actually started moving, got it out of my hand luggage and put my rack sack in the hold-all I wouldn't be seen as an a5s would I?!

PS: Does anyone have a small case (if there is one) for sale for a Canon D30 as I need one

I ALWAYS carry mine on the plane as carry-on luggage, I would not leave it to the treatment of the conveyerbelts and luggagehandlers in the airport. I got it all in a Lowepro bag that is small enough to use as handluggage.

Most of the lowepro's will fit an slr. I would suggest that you go down to the camera shop and try out a couple of bags to see what you like the most. Much will depend on your lens set up...SLR with a 50mm lens will take one bag, having a couple of lenses or a monster like a 100-400 and you need a much bigger bag! Try out some of the back pack versions like the micro trekker etc...I have one and it is great for travel but a pain at airshows etc because it is just not handy to grab something out of...

There are so many bags on the market you really need to put your hands on a couple and compare them...(A post on this over in photo might get you even more answers...)

NEVER send your camera or equipment to be loaded in the cargo hold.. Always carry it on, be it in your carry-on bag or whatever.. I saw some TSA idiots at DTW one time "marvelling" over a passangers camera equipment taht was to be loaded into the hold.. I wouldn't trust any of them...(Baggage people) with that kidn of stuff.. Please.. take my clothes and shit, but not my camera and stuff!!

i figure that having a camera setup like some lucky few here i sould not send it to baggage either. i never send my flight bag down there though, and it has gotten me in trouble a few times. in there i have a scanner and GPS so the bag is easily worth about $1500.

I have a LowePro backpack that has the bottom half as a fully padded camera bag, and the top half as a regular backpack. It's discreet (Flag sewn over the LowePro label) protects a reasonable amount of equipment well, and convenient to use. With it on my back, I still am allowed a piece of carry on luggage as well. The carry on holds the laptop and other stuff that won't be needed during the flight and tucks either into the overhead while the backpack sits under the seat, easily reachable in flight.

Cancidas: Oh no I'm not going to be checking in any camera equipment! All in hand luggage on every occasion   and you have given me a thought about taking my GPS along with me.

Agree with the choice of the Orion, and i like the idea of putting something over the Lowpro label.
Mine carries 2 olympus om2 bodies, a 24/28/35/50 and 70-210 lens motor drive and flash gun Oh and a convertoer. The top half takes the video camera, and dont forget the outside and inside pockets as well.

A further note on the Orion Trecker Backpack. I use mine while travelling and shooting in foreign cities. I end up looking just like any other tourist with their small day-pack on their back. And the great news is.... the top half is tall enough to hold SEVERAL bottles of wine, bread, cheese etc. YUMMY.....

I got my Orion Trekker and it's great  . Used it for a weekend of spotting at my local, SOU.

One thing I should of asked when I posted this was whether I should carry on hand luggage (i.e.: Bag on my back) and have my camera on its strap round my neck?

Do you think BA would keep up a fuss about that?

Right now, I can just put my camera bag in my backpack and carry it on, since it is relatively small. I would NEVER consider checking a camera.

2912n, if I end up getting a 135-400mm lens, a LowePro Nova-4 would not hold it?

I don't think I would buy a backpack for a camera, since I usually carry-on a backpack anyway.
