What do people think of the new JAT colours? I think they are terrible. They should have kept the 1990s colours of the Socialist Yugoslavia colours.

Also what do people think the future for airlines in the balkans. Croatia Airlines seems to be doing well, Adria doesn't seem to do much, Air Bosna gone, Montenegro Airlines is tiny, Balkan Air is new and Tarom is all over the place. Maybe Jat will become dominant player??

Concerning the livery - this is one of the few times that I've actually found the previous livery better than the one replacing it... what were they thinking??? Don't we already have enough of those white, white and white liveries with a little bit of color in there???

About JAT becoming a dominant player - not really sure about that, but the customers that I had booked on JAT didn't really come back and make comments about how brilliant the flight was... it was more along the lines of "I was glad when we landed"...

But, in principle, I think they do have a chance of being one of the dominant players in the Balkans - but I guess that it'll take at least until the rest of the world doesn't associate the Balkans with the war there any more...

Regards,
Frank

I sometimes wondering what is going on in the heads of airlines' decission makers nowadays. First Cyprus Airways, than Ethiopian, JAL and NWA, recently Luxair and TED. Like JAT these are neither true improvements. They make a fool of themselves, of their airlines and above all of their passengers. This new JAT for example has nothing to do with "home carrier" branding. How should you feel as a Serb boarding this livery. Would you be proud to fly your national carrier?? Is an inexpensive aircraft paint design more important than image? Image is an important part of a successful marketingmix. Ofcourse airlines suffer heavy competitions today but that doesn't mean that a paint design has to look cheap.

VG Airlines, Australian Airlines, Gulf Air, (new)PIA, Qatar Airways, SAS, Sun Country and Continental Airlines were/are one of the finest liveries over the recent years. Chapeau for these airline identities.

I also think the new JAT colors are terrible. The older tiled one is much better and looks more elegant.
Dont know much about airlines in the Balkans, as far as their endeavors, and financial situation, but one thing is for sure, the Balkans, especially Croatia, are beautiful and they attract a lot of tourists, especially in the summer time. I flew Croatia Airlines from Zagreb to Dubrovnik on its 732, and well, i wasnt particularly impressed since the flight is quite short but i sure did have a great time in the Adriatic Coast.

I still cannot believe this has happened. Btw JAT is not the only one in the world which messed up its identity. I agree with Boeing777/747, this JAT design has nothing to do with "home carrier" branding. I'm thinking to move to the Moon...

Okay Boeing 777/747, Avianca is neither a very good improvement. You'd better send all those airlines to me. Here is my airline design portfolio for you:

Of the liveries worn by JAT 737-300s past and present, my favorite is:

Has a clean, modern look (whether we like it or not, "Eurowhite" is in vogue) with just enough color to liven it. And the JAT billboard title makes the aircraft instantly recognizable.

My best guess is that JAT will continue in its tradition of success on all fronts. Since ZAG, LJU, SPU and DBV are no longer in the picture as focus cities/hubs for JAT following the breakup of the Yugoslav Federation, it seems highly unlikely their fleet will ever reach the size of the pre-1990 JAT.

Wow, impressive. Pitty that Luxair did not select one of you designs. Because what they have now is an uncontroled and weak "Eurowhite 13 in a dozen have seen before cheapo" livery.

No comments Boeing777/747, these are your words. Keep it to the subject: JAT. I'm off line now, researching what airlines move to make such strange decissions.

I personally think that this new livery makes JAT look like a Low cost Carrier. Maybe that was what they were trying to achieve? this could be in order to get business away from its neighbouring airlines i.e. CSA Malev LOT Tarom, etc...I don't think JAT will ever be as large as it was in the 80's, early 90's with DC-10's flying all over the world.

cheers!

The current JAT livery is one of the few eurowhite designs I liked. Good, triumphant logo on tail and bold JAT letters.

These new funny clown dots belong in the circus. Hate the font even more

Air Orange, the only design I like of those is the VG.. which would almost be a classic had the airline survived longer. Mama air, crystal airways, Air holland and others are horrible (these are my words) no hard feelings  Big grin Airlines like Avianca, etc, should let real artists and designers from their own countries do that job of coming up with unique, classic liveries as it was once done.

too many blue tails with white/grey fuselages already, for a visually inclined aviation enthusiast like myself its a visual desaster.

Most latin american airlines today look like crap because they've given the airline restyling to foreign or modernistic/simplistic design firms with no creativity. Airline recognition isn't the same as home decoration

I don't know what JAT was thinking, this has to be one of the ungliest color schemes. My first flight was when I was 8 years back in 1987 and it was on JAT from JFK-ZAG. They were a good airline in the 80's and I don't see them being as good as they were before. I think this is the largest JAT will be, I don't see them being any larger. But they do need a another color scheme quick!!

What does JAT actually stand for?

You're probably right - the livery was the result of a competition launched by JAT a few months back. The results were so bad that the judges actually said that none of the shortlisted finalists was good enough - so they went for a cobbled-together mixture which combined two of the entries.

And 'presto'...there's the result.

I actually came up with a couple of ideas myself, but never got around to sending them in. I wish I had now. Big grin

Hey

i hate the new livery. The New livery is going to look horrible on a DC-10 or a 777 if they ever get around to painting it.

JAT isnt trying to be a homelandcarrier. After the end of country of Yugoslavia,JAT is focusing on becoming a international carrier.Thats the main reason they choose this livery, since it has nothing to do with the country.I am sure that in a year or so they will modify it.Remember the old new livery.First they had JAT is small letters and yugoslav airlines in grey next to it, Then they added big JAT titels on the body and eventually they added yugoslav airlines in blue letters next to it.Considering how slow they are painting their aircraft, the old livery will be around for some more years,so plenty of time to enjoy it.
I agree that JAT isnt the best airline, but considering in what conditions they had to operate, and what type of missmanagment they had, they are doing ok.You cannot compare them with other carriers like Croatian , Adria and some eastern european airlines, since JAT had to stop their operations several times due to sanctions. They will never be as big as they were before, since they homemarket has been reduced by more then 50%.
But i wouldent rule them out yet. They will be around for many more years.
Regarding the livery, i think they will make some modifications on it.Possibly a blue tail and white circles on those dots as somebody mentioned it before.personally i would like them to do something about the engines.
anyway , just my two dinars  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

TUPOZURE: JAT stands for Jugoslovenski Aero Transport, meaning Yugoslav Air Transport. But since the country of Yugoslavia no longer exsists , The company chnaged their name to Jat Airways.

JAT- More then flying  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

JAT's new livery is the worst I've seen lately, simply disgusting, it looks like a kindergarden group designed it! Sadly they also belong now into the category: "Their new livery has become much worse than their older livery".

OK the new colors are nice but are they going to paint all the aircraft in the fleet or only about 1/3 of them as with the other livery.

By the way, do the crew uniforms change as well? A clownsuit for the cabin crews would fit perfect with that livery.

MIAMIx707 and LaCarlota:

Originally JAT was standing for Jugoslovenski Aero Transport. The airline decided to remove the meaning of JAT but kept the name Jat as it is well known by both ex Yugoslavs and people around the world.Notice that it is spelled Jat Airways and not JAT Airways.
CSA did the same thing. It used to stand for CzechoSlovakian Airlines(Cesko Slovenske Aerolinie), but Czechoslovakia doesent exist anymore.

CSA starts with a C so it's good enough for Czech Airlines, Jat Airways still brings to mind the "Jugoslovenksi" Still, unfitting name and ridiculous colorscheme for a national airline.

Flyboy_se,

I have to agree with you for most of what you said. It was evident before the competition began, that JAT was in search of a new identity that would not associated with the nation. They are definitely looking outside the box on this issue, however, I am disappointed with the new identity. To a certain degree, Jat Airways is looking at establishing themselves on the former Yugoslav market.

The fact that they are also forming a low-cost regional carrier says it all. By this coming summer, they will likely serve the following Yugoslav destinations: Ljubljana (Slovenia), Zagreb, Dubrovnik (Croatia), Banja Luka, Sarajevo (Bosnia), Skopje, Ohrid (Macedonia), Belgrade, Nis, Podgorica, Tivat (Serbia and Montenegro). A few other destinations that may eventually be exploited, include: Maribor (Slovenia), Split (Croatia), Mostar (Bosnia).

The only remaining thorn, is resuming flights to Chicago, Toronto and maybe Montreal. New York is clearly a success.

And yes, it's more than flying!  Smokin cool

JU101:
am disapointed with the new identity aswell.Surprised that the people at Jat couldent come up with something more original.I just hope that the livery of the Intair Link comes out better.
Resuming more long haul flights would be good.Hopefully on their own planes.they could lease some 767 s.

MIAMIx707:
too bad that Jat Airways bring to mind Jugoslovenski for you.
You have to agree with me that S&M Airways woulent be appropriate  Smile
