Scotland’s first long-haul flights to Asia were officially confirmed today. Middle Eastern airline Emirates announced daily flights to Dubai starting next April. It is the first time Glasgow has received cash from the £6.8million fund - Edinburgh has won seven new subsidised services.

The move, which reaffirms Glasgow's status as Scotland's long-haul hub, was welcomed by city council and tourism chiefs, who have been lobbying hard for cash from the fund to come to Glasgow Airport. Emirates will carry 150,000 passengers a year to and from Glasgow in its first year using a 285-seat Airbus A330 flights.

Continental have upgraded the Glasgow to New York Newark flights for this winter from a Boeing 757-200 to a Boeing 767-200ER and next summer they will upgrade to a Boeing 767-400 aircraft the Glasgow to New York flights continue to be one of Continentals more successful services.

PIA are set to announce new flights from Glasgow to Karachi, Islamabad and Faisalabad. Flights will be operated by Airbus A310 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Flights to Karachi will operate Karachi-Lahore-Oslo-Glasgow and the 2nd flight a week to Karachi and Islamabad will operate Karachi-Islamabad-Amsterdam-Glasgow and flights to Faisalabad will be direct.

Qatar airways are rumoured to be in talks with Glasgow airport management about new flights to Doha.

Zoom Airlines have announced that they will double the flights between Glasgow and Calgary and an extra weekly flight to Vancouver. Since tickets went on sale in October for flights from Glasgow to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax and Ottawa. Zoom have received well over 6000 bookings.

US Airways start a seasonal GLA-PHL flight this year also, using 767-200ERs.

What about BWIA' rumor to fly from Barbados to Prestwick (is that still a rumor, or have they changed their plans and maybe operate from Glasgow- which would make sense)

Are there any charter airlines that fly between Glasgow or Edinburgh and Egypt (either Cairo, Luxor or the Red Sea resorts)?

No. I believe at one time there were plans top operate from Glasgow to Luxor.

Also new for Glasgow are the Thomas Cook Canadian services - up to 7 flights a week for the summer to Toronto with re-fitted 757's. And MyTravel have separated the weekly Canadian Affair Calgary and Vancouver charter to once a week each. YYC will be served with 767's and YVR will operate non-stop with A330's.

really pulled their GLA-Canada flights.?

Air Canada Flight 843 from GLA-YYZ is still in the summer timetable

Perhaps GKirk was getting mixed up with the MAN-YYZ service which is being taken over by bmi?

Air Canada's daily YYZ-GLA is very much on this summer along with 3 Air Transat, 2 Zoom and up to 7 Thomas Cook flights a week.

I think if man-bos on aa is succefull GLA will follow and hopefully a schedaul mia flight was that not in the pipeline by someone. hopefully we steal bwia away from the speculated pik bmia service away. We need more euro services though and i am sure this will come in the near future wither it be easyjet, fly globespan or flybe or even someone else. Dont forget about were air-scotland may fly there speculated 767.
