Well...
I do see some strange delays on delta.com and the FAA says that due to DAL MAINLINE ONLY there is a ground stop to ATL and in an unrelated note traffic to CVG will not be allowed to depart until 6:30pm due to TSTMS.

What is all about going on with DL? Is that computer system is down for hours and when will get bring it back normal again?

Didn't this happen to HP in the late 90s? Also, is Song counted as mainline?

It happened to NW in 2001, much to my chagrin. After we raced to our connecting flight to CLE in DTW, we taxied out for departure, only to hear that a computer glitch in MSP had grounded the entire fleet. We sat on the taxiway for about an hour and a half, decided to go back to the gate to let people off that wanted to drive to CLE. About a half-hour later, we were able to taxi out and depart to Cleveland, arriving about two and a half hours late.

Ironically, we had been switched to a flight to CLE because our flight to BWI had been cancelled due to awful weather on the East Coast... CLE was as close to Baltimore as you could get at that point in the day.

Not a banner operational day by any stretch of the imagination.

Sounds similar to what happened to CO a few weeks ago. Flights systemwide were delayed for hours.

Why would there be a ground stop in ATL? It seems that if the dominent carrier there is grounded, that would make it easier for everyone else to find a landing slot, no?

I just saw the story on Orlando's News Channel 2 11:00pm airing. I love Channel 2's accuracy on the clips it used for the story. It showed Delta 727s and L-1011s taxiing in Orlando! LOL. I think it's time they update their video clips. They also said that not only Delta, but SONG flights to ATL were also affected. WOW! Song services MCO-ATL now too?? LOL. Gotta love the press!

Song doesn't serve MCO-ATL. They do however have JFK-ATL.

COEWRJN,

hey also said that not only Delta, but SONG flights to ATL were also affected. WOW! Song services MCO-ATL now too?? LOL. Gotta love the press!

I think Dlx737200 was referring to how the press goofed up in saying that Song services from MCO-ATL were affected, when in reality Song doesn't even fly this route.

Cheers,

only to hear that a computer glitch in MSP had grounded the entire fleet

Who is in charge of these airlines? People or computers? How exactly does a computer glitch "ground" the entire fleet?

It sounds like the computer programs that calculate weight & balance were the ones that went awry. If you can't get any information about the cargo you've got, baggage weight, souls on board, fuel, etc., how are you going to calculate manually? And, even if you do calculate manually, should you? Those can be pretty complex calculations, and most pilots never do them from scratch as part of a routine day.

As a passenger, I'd prefer to take the delay and let the computer do the math.

I heard that parts of DL's fleet was grounded in ATL but the rest of the mainline fleet was still flying. That was on CNN.

You have got to love this comment from the CNN story. I swear right now that I haven't edited it out at all. Just added the bold type.

The Atlanta-based airline uses the computer data in question to calculate weight and balance, and process passenger-related information, said Kathleen Bergen of the FAA.

"It's not a safety-related issue," Bergen said

You that was one thing I appreciated when I worked at Reeve. We where more then capable of reverting back to paper operations if a problem arouse.

I don't know about SLC, but since CVG was delayed anyway, the problem didn't effect CVG. It did effect song from what I read online and from delta.com.

Just flew JFK-CDG yesterday and everything was fine...looks like JFK was fine except for DL193 JFK-ATL which was still sitting on the taxiway when we taxied past it, 1.5 hours after its scheduled departure time...also there was a song 757 stuck on the taxiway as well

That's how American Eagle does it.... First Officer fills out the form and adds up weights and the Captain uses a whiz wheel/circle graph to find the center of gravity.

Flairport:

All flight departures were delayed yesterday, systemwide, out of all airports. DL simply couldn't move an aircraft except to parking areas.

Anyway, this was terrible news for DL, which can lose as much as $10million or more per day while it's shut down. Good news, OTOH, for FL, WN, AA, and other airlines that have large operations at DL hubs. This was not what an airline that lost $380million last quarter needed.

That is what I thought. I think that the weather at CVG saved them in a way as it effected all airlines, though.

There is no doubt about it, yesterday was a very expensive day for Delta. Though one day of that will probably not kill them, it certainly does not help. However, it is anyone's guess as to how long it will be before operations get back to normal after that.

As some one who flew Delta yesterday (song) this is what happened (FLL-JFK). After we boarded the aircraft the captain announced that we would be pushing back in a few moments. He came on 10 mins later to inform us that ground computers are not functioning properly and he is having trouble getting all the paperwork completed for departure. Another 5 mins later he comes on to inform us that we cannot obtain gate departure approval because of this computer problem. We finally leave after around 30 mins of just sitting at the gate. We landed at JFk only to find out the same problem is screwing up departures out of JFK. Therefore we did not have a gate to pull into. After waiting another 35-40 mins we found a gate and was towed into it. So this computer problem was an internal issue that stopped flights from leaving the gates.

I flew Song yesterday afternoon EWR-MCO. Our flight was not delayed, however, the Mad Dog going to ATL was delayed 15 mins at the gate. After they pushed back and left (still about 15 mins ahead of us) we boarded. Then as we were taxi-ing to the active runway, I noticed the Mad Dog sitting on the next taxiway over from us. We went right by it and left for MCO. Our flight was on time, I guess that Mad Dog was not! The CVG flights were delayed too, but that was announced as "weather related". No reason was given for the ATL flight delay.

Another Song aircraft arrived just as we began boarding. It arrived on time and I assume it left on time as well.

When something like this happens to DL is it normal for it to affect Song since it is a subsidiary?

I was flying MDW-TPA via ATL on sat and what a nigtmare it was. I should have rolled into TPA at 22.00 and we eventually got there at 02:30!

I arrived at MDW at 14:00 for my 15:10 flight everything looked ok, aircraft on gate etc. Then the announcement that the computers were down and there would be a 30 minute delay. Then at about 16:00 the pilot came out to explain the problem and that they were "estimating" a departure of 17:00. At this point we got a $10 meal voucher to spend in the airport. Then the departure time was moved back to 18:00. At this point the next flight for ATL was due to leave and this was duly cancelled and combined with ours. By now the people without connections and without checked bags had had enough and either rescheduled for the next day, cancelled their trip or got rebooked on Airtran (a very good day for them).

Anyway we eventually got away around 20:00 with about 20 people from two flights on our 738 - a very comfy flight though.

When we arrived at ATL there was absolute chaos. Luckily my flight to TPA was delayed by the same 41/2 hours the first flight was so a "normal" connection (although this was not before visiting about 3 gates as it kept changing). We eventually boarded at 00:00 only then for ATL to be hit by the kind of thunder storm I've never seen before which meant we had to hold for an hour to wait for it to clear. Got away at 01:20 and arrived about 02:30 - 4 1/2 hours late and very relieved and very tired.

This was my first Delta experience - what an introduction!!

Are you serious? A computer glitch can very easily ground an entire fleet. No one is saying all of DL's planes were incapable of flying, but if you don't know who's on the plane or the cargo load, you certainly can't take off.

Most manifests, bag counts, and cargo loads are all held in a central computer system for any airline. If that crashes, you basically are hosed. There are ways around it, by printing off a manual manifest for each and every flight for an entire day. But I can't even imagine having to do that for all the flights DL has going thru ATL on a given day. Even if you are able to do that, there will be big delays and a disruption to your system.

No, not all were delayed, not all were grounded. ATL had the brunt of it, CVG was complicated by wx. Most west coast operations were on schedule. It wasn't as bad as everyone thought. Unless you were a pax affected I suppose!

This just caught my attention:

Seems like they finally arrested the guy (an 18 year-old student) who wrote the Sasser-worm and caused all the trouble at Delta Air Lines.

I bet that guy will end up paying back the millions of dollars in damage that he caused for the rest of his life...
