Which airport offers better connections (both timing and destinations served) for passengers wishing to continue on to points in Europe and the Middle East? Gatwick or Heathrow?

Are you talking about a specific airline or just number of connections to europe and the middle east?

My first inclination would tword LHR.

Well if your talking about BA specifically then it has to be LHR because BA don't fly to the Middle East from Gatwick. But if the destination you want to connect to is a BA destination from Gatwick and your flying in on AA, BA or DL (im guessing your coming from the US) then you wont have to change terminal which is more convenient. Also you'll be able to fly on a B737-300/400/500 which are getting phased out on 31st October 2004.

Just overall in general for passengers coming from the US. The connecting airline doesn't really matter.

Well LHR offers more connections (more flights from the US and more destinations in Europe/Mid East), however i would say LGW is easier to find your way around. In LHR you could arrive in Terminal 4 and depart from Terminal 3, which means a bus journey all the way around the airport and then through the tunnel into the main terminal area, which can take up to 15mins. You could however get the tube, but then you have to wait for it to arrive etc, and even that could take you 10mins. However at LGW if you're arriving in the south terminal and departing in the north terminal then you just need to hop on a 40 second skytrain ride and your there. And 2 trains operate so you would be waiting no more than 1 or 2 minutes.

Also if you're going to be connecting in the morning then the security checkpoint, expecially in LHR's T1 is going to be mayhem. When i flew to Madrid, an 08:15 departure, it took us nearly 45mins to get through security. Gatwick, i have never waited more than 5mins.

Forget London completly and go to Frankfurt or Amsterdam or even try smaller Manchester or Munich ALL are LESS hassle.
Just Ask COL on these forums who seems to like transiting Manchester from the US.
HEATHROW is THE WORST in THE WORLD !!!!!!

You can actually get to more US destinations from LGW than at LHR:

Atlanta
Baltimore
Boston
Charlotte
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Dallas/ Fort Worth
Denver
Detroit
Houston
Las Vegas
Miami
Minneapolis/ St Paul
New York JFK
Newark
Orlando
Philadelphia
Phoneix
Pittsburgh
Raleigh/ Durham
Sanford
St Louis
San Diego
Tampa

You can also get to more destinations with BA from LGW than you can at LHR.
( That includes franchise partners)
I was suprised at first.

LGW is a more pleasant airport for connections, However LHR has much more destinations. If you have a chance I would go for LGW.

L1011 thats correct as BA and a number of other airlines including Alitalia have concentated their Heathrow routes to the highly popular Capital/major cities routes only.
Just look at Italy for instance ONLY ROME and MILAN served by Alitalia admittedly on very high frequence but no Venice , Bologna etc.....
Want to go to Genoa no go !

So as I said forget London and go via somewhere else.

NB. Actually the MOST scheduled UK - European destinations served directly from Stansted !

LHR certainly offers better connections but LGW and others may certainly be more pleasant to use. LHR is quite honestly a dump and a disgrace for London. I have never flown from T4 which may be different but T3 is a shambles. Incidentally, if you have to connect between T4 and T1,2,3 use the Heathrow Express which runs between the two every 15 minutes and is free if used as a connector. The buses are also free but take longer, the Tube is not free.

When I fly I usually go through LGW because the destinations where I need to go are well served by BA from this airport.
And I think that from LGW you can go to a lot of cities in Europe (like I fly from/to Venice...there are no BA flights from LHR to VCE....)

If you need to go to the middle east is better LHR because from LGW I only saw an Emirates 773 (I think it was...I don't remember very well), but not others middle east airlines.

Ciao
