Because AMS is served from 16 UK airports, while the Asian hubs are only served from Heathrow and Manchester... for millions of people in the UK, Amsterdam is a more convenient transfer point!

I believe a new Anglo-Chinese air services agreement made in February will allow for UK carriers to serve CAN and other chinese cities (Up to five if I recall), though nothing has been formally announced. It was talked about on here a few months back that both BA and VS are interested in expanding their services to China. I think one part of the agreement was that BA would be allowed to serve PVG alongside VS, which currently has exclusive rights from the UK side.

I think it's a case of waiting until this is formally settled and then BA and VS will make their pitches for the rights. I'd expect it to get bitter after the upset when BA thought PVG was in the bag, only to see the rights go to VS!
