Topic: US Law RE: Tix On Bankrupt Airlines To Expire?

Today I was talking to a friend of mine who is a retired travel agent. She told me that she believes that in Nov, 2004 the law that requires airlines to honor the tickets of airlines that have ceased operations be honored by other airlines will expire. She said that Congress will have to vote to extend the law. That seems unlikley as they will shortly recess until after the election.

Say, if I bought a ticket on US or any other financially weak US carrier for travel early next year and that airlines ceased operations before my travel date, that means other carriers will have to honor my ticket, if the law expires?

I am hoping there is somebody here who can give an absolute definitive answer on this subject. Many thanks in advance.

You should be ok with any US airline through the first part of 2005, with the exception of US, which is REALLY in a tough spot right now.

Can't speak about that law though, I didn't know one existed, but then a travel agent would, so I'll defer to someone else to answer that part of your question for you.

From someone who has wondered the same thing, and been in the industry myself, there is NO law of the sort that I have ever found. Not saying there is not one, but I highly doubt there is..

Let's ask Greg.. Our resident 'lawyer'...  Big grin

One of the USAToday travel columnists had a piece about it. Basically, it was passed as part of one of the post 9/11 Airline aid bills. Other carriers are required to honor the tickets of the carrier that has shut down on a space-available basis. I believe they can charge a $25 fee to the pax. The law does expire in March of 2005, I believe.
