Just saw this on tv here.. figured i'd post it...They said that Edward's aircraft experienced a problem with a generator on the take off roll and it was aborted. anyone know exactly what happened? They showed the aircraft on the tarmac... looked like a 727

I read an article that said it took off from Hopkins Airport. Amazing how lazy reporters can be sometime.  Big grin

Maybe his aircraft will just never get repaired and never go anywhere and he can just walk to his next stop. I love how the Dems claim to be "of the people" yet gallivant across America in their own private jets like they are taking the subway around town.

This is normal in campaigns. If memory serves, Bush did the same thing in '00. And hell, he gets to use the executive fleet for his campaign stops. It's hardly a partisan thing.

The pilot was committed to take-off before he was against it.

Not like I like either one of these guys but Bush is going around campaigning on Air Force One at Tax Payer expense. I am sure fuel costs for flying it around aren't coming out of his pocket

Tho im a bigt kerry supporter, Bush should be in AF1, he is the commander in chief and needs the added safety/options. As for dems galavanting around? Its part of the game, if you want to win you have to spend like a winner. Tho bush is supposed to reimburse for campaign trips, they never do (clinton, bush, regan etc). -Matt in KITH

Actually HlywdCatft, the campaign is required to reimburse the Air Force, the equivelt of what commercial travel would have cost.

The theory being is that the president shouldn't be penalized for using an expensive military airplane like the VC-25 at the insistance of the secret service and to make sure all the communications he needs for his job are with him, but at the same time, he does need to pay for his travel.

I believe Bush is entitled to AF1 but I believe that if the trip is for campaign purposes then there should be some contribution from his re-election campaign coffers, its a hidden subsidy for re-election.

Acidradio.... When you run for president or vice president, you fly in your own plane. If Kerry and Edwards were flying around on Southwest or riding Amtrak, you'd be laughing at them for being cheap.

It's a $250 million business, more or less, and it obviously requires the flexibility of a personal charter. Bashing them for chartering jets as Bush campaigns with Air Force One is quite unfair.

Jcded, I believe that when AF1 is used to fly to campaign events, the Bush "re-"election campaign has to pay a few first class fares for his campaign advisors that fly on the airplane. I bet he's paying much less for airfare than Kerry and Edwards are, but that's just an advantage that the incumbent president has.

I'm sure Kerry supported the "aborted" take-off. It's the pilot's right to choose you know......

Anyway, it is cool that they are using a 727, which is very distinctive. It adds a touch of class being such a beautiful aircraft, whatever your politics may be. In any case the dem campaign actually has used Amtrack a lot, making whistle stops along the way in their own carriage....

Not only is flying commercial for all those campaign stops its impractical for any candidate Republican or Democrat. The fact of the matter is that candidates need flexible airtravel because on the campaign trail last minute changes are the norm. So chartering is the way to go.

The 757 that Jackass flies around in looks even uglier. I saw it at CMH today and made sure to give it the one finger salute on the way past.  Smile

It is too bad Bush never uses the 757s, or 737s for that matter, that he has at his disposal. Would save US taxpayers a lot of money.

This is a classic instance of "You get what you pay for." Does anyone remember if Bush made Cheney ride in a broke down 727? That thing looks rather dilapidated.

Well it was built in '82 and prior to Champion getting ahold of it, NW owned it until about a year ago, so it's seen a bit of service

actually it is one of our VIP configured airplanes(59 seats) and is immaculate inside and out,the captain made the right decision, the mechanics addressed the issue and they were on their merry way shortly after, by the way,the 727 still rules!

He uses the 757 when they are going to shorter fields that the VC-25 cannot get into such as Flagstaff. Saw it two years ago when we were flying a Press corps charter.
