Topic: AA 767 Engine Fire Departing Buenos Aires?

I just heard a rumor about an AA 763 which had to abort its take-off out of EZE due to an engine fire.

I apologize for the vague information but, like I said, it's just a rumor I heard and my intention with this post is not to publish this event as a fact, but to look for confirmation that it actually did happen. This should have taken place within the last 48 hours or so.

Thanks in advance,
AM

I just came across the news on La Nacion of Buenos Aires, this morning's edition. Indeed, it happened last night @ 11:15 PM, AA 908, second evening flight to MIA, B777, with 216 passengers on board and 14 crew members. No injuries during the evacuation, save for 5 paxs that had to be taken to local hospitals due to smoke inhalation. Fire started on the right engine, and take off run was aborted. Apparently smoke spread to the cabin (take this with a grain of salt, we all know how the media can blow things out of proportion).

Cheers

La Nacion

Didn't notice what a/c type it was, but did read about this in Sabre this morning at work. Apparently chutes were deployed, and everyone evacuated.

Hi,

The aircraft did indeed suffer extensive (i.e. WAY beyond repair!) damage to the number 2 engine, with secondary damage to the pylon. Apparently a fuel control nozzle in the engine split or burst and sprayed fuel everywhere on spool-up. This is probably when engines are using their most fuel and so a considerable amount of fuel leaked out causing a serious fire. Aircraft with engines that had similar hours on them were inspected for the same fault but none were found. It seems there is now a major problem getting a new RR engine to Buenos Aires. The only aircraft that can carry them are the Antonov's and they are constantly busy. Last time this happened to AA a few months back the aircraft fortunately was at LGW and a new "bare" engine was trucked down direct from RR HQ in Derby U.K.

SevenHeavy

This is a very strange coincedence. Last Friday the same thing happened with an 777 American Airlines flight that was departing from EZE, while it happened again this past Monday with a United 767 departing to Chicago.
3 turbine explosions in one week to two different US cariers upon evening departure from EZE. This is very rare. These are not rumors as all the newscasts in Argentina reported it minutes after it happened.

Hi,

To clarify there was only one engine fire for AA in EZE - that of the B777. There was no AA B767 with a similar problem.

2 AA Aircraft in past week (777 & 777)
1 United aircraft in past week (767)

Hopefully nothing happens to Delta in the coming days/ weeks/ months.
If so, I'm booking Aerolineas.

Keep your ears/ eyes peeled.

One American 777 engine blew up last Friday (11/3)
One United 767 engine blew up last Monday (14/3)
One American 777 engine blew up again last night (17/3)
TOTAL = 3 turbine explosions on 3 seperate aircraft.

Three turbine explosions uopn departures on 3 American aircraft on the same runway at the same airport in one week.

Quoting Yu138086 (Reply 5):

Does the coincidence have anything to do with this thread being created last Saturday? Are we sure we're not picking up just the day instead of the date?

According to aa.com, all of AA's flights from EZE to the US have made it safely to their destination for the past two days.

I stand corrected.
It's an old post I added the "third" aircraft to.

It was NOT 3 aircraft, but rather just 2 aircraft in the past week.
Apoogies for any confusion.
