Subsequent to my 'AF's Africa routes from CDG' thread, I would like to establish the level of cargo transported between Paris and France as a whole and West and Central Africa and vice-versa. What is the level of trade between Paris/France and Francophone countries and vice-versa?

Any info. at all? I am quite surprised that no-one thus far seems to have any knowledge on this subject.

Most of the cargo is carried on regular pax flights. You can try the following website for more on this topic.

Thanks for that link!

Does AF itself op. the A3F (which I take to be the A300F)? If not, who does on its behalf?

Does Islandsflug Cargo fly the ABF for AF? I ask because there are lots of Islandsflug ABF photos at CDG in the database, almost always being TF-ELW.

Air France Cargo operates only B742F & B744F ... and soon B777LRF !

The A300F are operated on behalf of AF by Islandflug Cargo, or by MNG Cargo

Well you made me dig it out.

I have a cargo market analysis for the African continent from 2002.

While it also covers North Africa, I presume you are mostly interested in Sub-Saharan Africa, so I'll only mention those countries.

Here are some highlights.

Top 5 GDP's
1 - South Africa
2 - Nigeria
3 - Kenya
4 - Cote d'Ivorie
5 - Cameroon

Exports as % of GDP
1 - South Africa 27%
2 - Nigeria - 18%
3 - Kenya - 25%
4 - Cote d'Ivorie 46%
5 - Cameroon - 26%

Top Exporters
1 - South Africa
2 - Nigeria
3 - Cote d'Ivorie
4 - Angola
5 - Gabon

Top Importers
1 - South Africa
2 - Nigeria
3 - Ghana
4 - Cote d'Ivorie
5 - Kenya

Top 5 European exporters
1 - France
2 - Germany
3 - UK
4 - Italy
5 - Spain

Top 5 European importers
1 - Netherlands
2 - UK
3 - Spain
4 - France
5 - Belgium

In general Southern and Western Africa import more then they export, while Eastern Africa exports more than they import.

Those are some basics. I'd be here writing all night if I were to include detailed trade flows and commodity specifics for each market.

Again the above data is only for Sub Saharan Africa. North Africa - Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco are a whole separate large market with different variables.

Then again, one has to keep in mind that Ivory Coast's GDP roughly amounts to that of an urban area like Toulouse (no, this is not an Airbus bias), about 800 000 inhabitants.

Just as well, there is a common misperception about France's influence in Sub-Sahara Africa. Contrary to what is being said in the media, the region is not France's exclusive backyard anymore. The US has taken over as main trade partner in a few of these countries.

Of course, France remains a major actor in business and politics there, but not as much as it used to. Now if that's good or bad, I have no idea.  Smile

Pearson, I do not know how that translates into cargo volumes in and out of CDG for AF towards Africa, but that may give you an idea on how to approach the subject...

Just my  twocents  ...

Cheers,

Y.
