Yesterday I was flying back to New York from DFW and I had to be dropped off a couple dozen yards ahead of the curbside check-in area in the middle of Terminal C. I wasn't checking a bag, so I just walked into the the first entrance I saw, which I thought would lead me to the stairs to the gate level.

Some renovation work was being done in this area, which seemed to contain a stop for the employee-only tram linking the terminals. (I'm not even sure if such a tram still exists -- I thought that the old DFW tram system -- not Skylink -- was more extensive than just the TrAAin, but from what I'm finding online, apparently not.) While I was down there, I saw some TrAAin cars speed by; sure enough it didn't stop at this station.

As it turned out, there weren't any stairs in this particular area, only the tram stop and an elevator. By the time I discovered this, I was standing at the elevator and not entirely sure I was someplace I was supposed to be but, what the hell, I decided to take the elevator up to the gates.

While waiting for the elevator, I turned around and saw an old brown plastic sign with white vinyl letters. In large letters it advised that the current terminal was an AA terminal, but in smaller letters below, said "METRO, SUNBELT, CHAPARRAL."

At first it wasn't apparent to me that these were airlines. I had never heard of a single one of them. But sure enough, these were all airlines that used to serve DFW. And if the source I found is correct, it looks like Chaparral became American Eagle, whereas Sunbelt and Metro were somewhat less successful.

But the really remarkable thing is that it looks like this sign must have dated from before 1984, when Sunbelt ceased operations (again, according to my Internet source -- correct me if I'm wrong on this). I thought it was amazing that this relic still existed in a forgotten corner of DFW. (Though considering they were renovating that area, that sign probably won't be around much longer. I wish I had gotten a picture, but I didn't have my camera on me.) Really, about the only thing that could have made it better is if it was a large sign pointing the way to the Braniff, Eastern and Pan Am gates.

I was flying on an ex-TWA 757 last week, and the beverage cart still had TWA printed on the side, though I'd have to say that the Metro-Sunbelt-Chaparral is a somewhat more impressive testimonial to the unexpected longevity of corporate identities.

What are some other remnants you've seen of airlines that are long gone?

The US Airways Shuttle used to be the Eastern Shuttle, then the Trump Shuttle, and Delta Shuttle used to be Pan Am Shuttle. There are some remnants. Also, some of US MD-80s had galley instructions labeled PSA until they were retired. Also, I believe DL's 732s and many of ther 733s are ex-Western.

Didn't some of FL's old DC-9s still have J7 Critter labels inside?

At PHL, the old Terminal E jetbridges that WN replaced a year ago (when it started service) still had TWA signs on it.

In some USAir operations rooms at places like GSO and RDU, there are old PIEDMONT signs and pictures all over. The ex-Eastern 757's that USAir flies have brown Passenger Service Units above the passenger seats that have not been changed out since the Eastern days. There is an Eastern 727 in full EAL paint sitting at the airport in Hagerstown, MD. Beside it is a Pan Am number 1 727. There are dumsters in MCO that now belong to Delta but you can see where they used to say Pan Am with the globe above it at one time. They must have pealed the Pan Am stickers off and the sun had faded everything around it. Plane as day, you can see the Pan Am titles and logo. I just saw that last week. Also, remember the pre-ValuJet AirTran??? AirTran still has a maintenance truck painted in old AirTran colors.

I once travelled by Ryanair and when the flight attendant demonstrated the emergency procedure, the life jacket blatantly read "Property of Lufthansa"!

I work (since 1990) in the former Pan Am building in NYC (200 Park Avenue, between Grand Central Station and 45th Street). While I don't see any old PanAm sign or logos or even shadows of them, in the Vanderbilt Street side lobby/enterance, is a sculpture of wire suspending a metal globe, which was installed during the time that PanAm was HQ'ed in this building, and a placque noting this, and is retained to remind of the building's history. During Christmas, the building has continued a tradition started by PanAm of collecting contributions from tennents and displaying just before Christmas, toys, bicycles and other related items to be given to children for the holidays. Also, there is still the 'Sky Club' on the top occupied floor.

I was in ... MIA, I think, last year, and I remember seeing some EAL signage. I think it might have been at a ticket counter where they were doing some renovations and they had pulled away whatever facade had been covering the Eastern logo underneath.

If AA ever goes belly up, it'll take 'em decades to remove all the AA stuff from around DFW. Look how long it's taken them to remove the Metro, Chaparral and Sunbelt stuff

We still have the Pan Am Building with in Honolulu. It still has the Pan Am and Pan American signs on the building. There was talk of removing the signs when Pan Am went out of business and the building passed through several owners, but nostalgia won out.

In Bogota and in Medellin there is still some Aces signage and 2 of West´s ATRs still have Aces seats, as they are ex-VX horses. AV´s F50s also have Aces seats. In the smaller airports (Armenia, Manizales, Barrancabermeja, Riohacha) there is still some Alianza Summa signage. In Bogota and Armenia there is still Inter signage, though the airline has only been gone for a couple of months.

There is a door that leads from the T2 ramp inside at ORD that still has the Pan Am logo. It does not look like anyone has tried to cover it up. CO now uses the gates where it is located.

In FLL, when you are at curbside checkin, look the big black boards that have sticker letters depicting what airline is in what terminal at an angle. if you are successful, you will see the Eastern, Carnival, Condor, and Delta Express stickers. These are all scattered at all different concourses though. And I'm sure you will see more too.

At the old Braniff terminal at DFW (2W now B), if you look at the signage at just the right angle you can still see Braniff International.

Also at Love Field (DAL), the old DL concourse was untouched up until a year or two ago. The gatehouses were still like the day Delta moved out. The podiums the little 4' high railing, everything. It was incredible.

Also at DAL, there was an old style Frontier sticker with the arrow on their old ops room.

The Critter lives at PHF! One of the original ValuJet stations, the wastebasket behind the AirTran podium in the gate area for gates 2/4/6 at PHF has a Critter logo on it. (Wish I'd had the camera with me...)

On a customs official's desk at ATL I found to my huge surprise a sticker from Busy Bee of Norway that used to operate one 737-200 and some F-27's and -50's on behalf of Braathens in Norway and around Europe. It may well still be there!

Also logos from Western and Reeves Aleutian came visible when they tore down the panels behind DL's old ticket counters in SEA a couple of years ago. I had a picture of that wall published in Airways.

Ooh, here's a good one. A nearly forgotten airliner, made by a long-gone manufacturer, flown by an extinct airline. And from the looks of it, surprisingly well preserved (all things considered.)

At O'hare, when you enter the airport vicinity to go to UAL's training center, there is (was) a large green sign with various airline names and logos laying in disrepair on the ground. The only (that I remember) Defunct airline I could read was Ozark. Most were not recognizable. I'd love to get my hands on that if it was possible.

CLT still has TWA listed on an overhead sign by curbside for terminal A, its been blotched out with some dark paint, but still clearly visible no less. Given that its CLT I wouldn't doubt there's some old Piedmont signage around, deep within the airport somewhere.

On some signs in the parking garage at SYR you can still see the remainders of the vinyl stick-on letters of Mohawk Airlines and British Airways (back when they were with US all the signs read USAir / British Airways). Just look at the blue/orange terminal guide signs.

Up until maybe six years ago, or so, there was an old aircraft stairway at LGB that still had the really old blue and red Braniff International letters. I don't know if it belonged to the airport. Until a few years ago, at LAX parking T2, at the streel level floor, there was a sign in blue letters pointing out Pan Am Terminal 2 and TWA Terminal 3. I used to feel nostalgia everytime I saw it. Felt sad to see that these two are long gone.  Sad Sometimes in really old travel agencies (or what used to be travel agencies) you still see airline logos of airlines from the past. Travel agencies themselves are a thing of the past!

Some Origin Pacific Jetstreams still have Ansett Cutlery and stuff. In a book I read called "No shitting in the toilet" the author claims that more than 3 different airlines logos on one a/c is a thing to be scared of!

The current Miami City Hall building is the old Pan Am Dinner Key Seaplane Terminal complete with all the PA trimmings on the extrior of the building.

I don't know if it's still there but at least into the very late 70s at Boulder City Nevada airport (before Las Vegas) you could still see the painted sign on the hanger advertising TWA DC3 service.

I've had the same experience as RayPettit regarding the 'Property of Lufthansa' lifevests. I believe some of FR's old B732's came from LH so i suppose thats why.

Meanwhile, until it was closed up, the old check-in area in SNN had a large PanAm logo'd sign over one of the ticket desks, it was turned back to front but it was still easy to see through the perspex. I always thought it would have been a nice piece of nostalgia to have.

By all means don't kill for it. It's N8869E. It is in full EAL paint, minus the titles although you can still see where they were.

Also, in CVG, the USAIRWAYS EXPRESS gate area still has old USAir signage upstairs.

The critter lived on at FL with some of the DC-9s you could see where the giant critter was removed from the bulkhead... in fact one of those went on ebay for alot of money...

Some other things the old EA logo is in a couple of places not viz to pax in atls FL gates

All the FL gates in ATL A logo coverd up the critter

Had one day where it fell down and the critter was there behind it causing mild emberssment.

At farther out stations, Aeroflot still uses airside personal baggage tags that are easily 40 years old. Probably they were printed up in the millions and they figure why let them go to waste. The language on them is very outdated, both in English and in Russian. I have one of these "antiques" hanging up at home, cause it is so cool looking.

In 2004 I was given tickets on Swiss that used old Swissair stock, the ticket jackets and boarding cards were the same old ones too. It was kind of cool. What was not so cool was the effective loss of my Qualiflyer miles.

Dozens of DC-9s in Northwest colors can be seen today still carrying the same registrations as when they served with long-gone airlines such as Hughes Airwest, Republic and Eastern.

I've got a half-empty airport sitting at I-70 and Lindbergh for ya.

Also, in the Concourse C hallway right past security making your way down to the gates you can see the little TWA planes in the clouds of the background wall display.

Of course that speaking, St. Louis has loads of TWA memorabilia here and there. Everything from old trucks, old signage to out of work former employees and furloughed flight attendants.

On the brighter note, I have my old Aviators credit card, napkins, wings, in flight magazines, flight stubs, etc. all kept in a box.

At OXR, they have a sign for AWE that has been basically turned around, though you can still clearly see the logo. It is just backwards.

Nothing remains but a parking garage and the control tower.

I would say the airport bought if off another airport, since Braniff, I am assuming you are referring to the old 50's/60's livery?, never served LGB. The later incarnation is a different story with the white letters and red pin-stripe.

Some of the airbridges from the old SFO International terminal wound up at a company in MOD a few years back. They sat on this property, with the old red, white, and blue UA logos for months before being cut-up for scrap.

Speaking of Braniff...At DAL, Wasn't there a sign once pointing to Braniff and Continental gates???? I remember it being at the point, where, if you walked straight ahead it was to where ASA and Conquest have been....and if you went to the left it was for the WN gates, then the right was in the direction of "Braniff Place". Was that the "Red" Concourse? Those are the WN offices right? It was part of the wall if I remember right, set into a stone wall, hence not easy to remove, but typical of the more "Permanent" school of airport design prevalent in those days.

Under the current WN gates at Love, was the customs and immigration halls for the few international AA flights calling at DAL then, well this was what it looked like when I stumbled upon them about 20 years ago...are they still there? When I saw it, it looked like it was last used only yesterday...EVERYTHING was left in place down to crumpled up pieces of paper in wastebaskets. eerie.

At Newark last month, I was looking up and noticed the CONTINENTAL name and logos have been removed from the space above the automatic doors. One can clearly see where the CO logo "USED" to be, but now gone. Why is that?

Just after the announcement of AA buyout of TWA I was commuting on a Tway flight. I was just curious but asked the F/A if some TWA logo'ed items had started to disappear to collectors. She said a little here and there. When I left the plane she handed me a paper bag folded over, winked at me and put her fingers to her lips suggesting shhhhhhh. I opened the bag sometime later to find a First Class coffee cup, saucer and place mat all in TWA logo. They are now a proud display in my china cabinet. On a different note I found and bought a book of matches at a pawn shop in Seattle. The cover was an old Western Indian head. There is a lot of nostalgia out there if you're looking for it.

At FMY (Page Field Ft. Myers Florida) on the old terminal building there is still logos for PanAm EAL and TWA on the sides of the buildings, they are very faded but still visible. I would not doubt that inside the building is all kinds of cool old stuff. Out on the Tarmac there are also still markings on the ground for parking the planes for 727's and DC-9's and the like.

I remember eating at a greasy diner off Queens Blvd. in New York several years ago and to my surprise, the flatware had that familiar "universe design" on it. Yeap, my fork, knife and spoon were from Pan Am. My friend was astounded that I could know this! Easy considering I was once a Pan Am flight attendant...... :O)

I used to see Northeast food carriers (with the NE logo) flying on DL up until a few years ago.

The TWA gates at CVG still had the 707 nosewheel stop line painted on the tarmac up until the early '90s.

I also still see the "SST" height setting on some of the older jetways control consoles.....

The tower is still around, and will be around for quite some time. The terminals are all but a memory, but there is an aircraft graveyard a mile or so north of the UA training building. An old Beech 18 and some old COex (black meatball) airstairs are in there!
At DEN (DIA), I've seen some TWA baggage carts, and, as of last Oct, Midway Airlines still had a curbside checkin stand. It's on the North side of Concourse West.
At MEM, TWA still had some baggage regulation signage down on the Concourse C baggage claim. And since MEM hardly updates their website, they still have TWE on one of the online terminal maps.

Just yesterday while driving down the Tarmec & perimeter road,I noticed the Wreck of old Shut Airlines of yesterday namely
B732 VT-ECP of Skyline NEPC.
F27 of East West Airlines
F27 of Continental Aviation.
Also a few trolleys & sign boards of East West Airlines,Modiluft,NEPC,Visa.
The East west Engineering complex was present too a few months back until recently demolished to construct the additional bays.
Brought back a lot of Memories.

Up until a few years ago at BOS there was a sign up in the cargo area for "PAN AM Cargo." I think that's gone now.

Also, a few miles from my house there is a company that went out of business, but they still had belly containers in their yard. Some were from Swissair.. still there to this day.

At gate A-15 in TPA our microphone thing has Pan-Am and PA and the globe engraved all over it. I get a kick out of that everytime I use it  smile  I imagine I am announcing a Pan-Am flight to a far away exotic land with a big regal looking 747 behind me instead of the actual purple 737 going to Kansas City  bored . Hee hee hee, I can dream....

And then again it might of just been just PA551/552, A B707 on a MIA-TPA-MEX-TPA-MEX rotation.

Later on:

5 dailies to MIA, 2 to JFK. All B727. The Mexico City flight was then routed through Miami, the onward segment operated with an A300.

Does anyone know why one of those TPA-MIA flights, was numbered WAY out of sequence? The flights to Miami were 301, 303, 319, 499, and 3098(???).
"3098" was not a codeshare, it was their own metal.
Codeshare flights were 270-271 and 4500-4999 on Pan Am Express.
There are other "unusual" flight numbers high up, a few 2000 series, some 3000, and a total of 4 oddities in the 4000 series below 4500......i.e. flight 4072, FRA-BUD is shown as PA, but on a TU154 (???)

I know nothing about PA operations out of FRA but id say that TU-154 flight to BUD would have been a codeshare with Malev.
