never heard someone bashing the 787 while i know a lot of people dislike it.... although im a boeing fan, please stop bashing the A380 everytime when there is a topic of praising the plane, its annoying. i know some of the people really dislike it but the people who don't like the 787 also not bash the plane every time...

The A380 is without a doubt an engineering marvel. Aesthetically, she's also a moped. Fun to ride, but don't let your friends catch you on one.

Yeah, yeah, I know that looks are subjective, so kill me. Ain't no way that gal is gonna' get an A on looks.

It is always a nice effect to see the preservation oil burn ou of the fuel system on first start of a new engine. Normally you should wet motor, then dry motor the engine first. Else you might get a visit by the airport fire crew....

No, I'm not suggesting that the engine is going to suck in the truck (I'm not that dumb!), but I would have thought it might sort of disrupt smooth airflow in a test like this.

I think the eventual stretched version (if there ever is one) will look more visually appealing than "Big Stubby" above.

The A380 will never rival the A330 in terms of beauty. The A330 is a graceful, beautiful plane, and the A380 is just f'ugly. The poor thing needs a nose job and a tummy tuck.

The way the truck is facing, whoever is sitting in there is having a great view of the engine. I wouldn't mind sitting there, as long as I don't get sucked in.

Now the 757, that is a beautiful aircraft. Not comparing them, just stating my opinion.

I dont realy like the 757 I know many love it but I prefer the 777 and 737-800 but I love the A380 (at some angles)

Beautiful? Well,not really. I don't think it's really as hideous as some people make it out to be, but it does seem to lack something. I think part of the asthetic problem is just that damn huge tail. Did Airbus ever consider having a triple-tail like a Connie's or something?

Just on an asthetic level, I tend to like the older airliners, either for their grace (Constellation) or the sense of power the lines convey (707, CV-880, DC-8, etc.) In the air, the 757 looks good, but on the ground the gangly gear makes it look awkward. (I have a love/hate relationship with the 757 - love the power, hate the damn passenger/bathroom ratio   .)

I think the A380's nickname should be the Manatee - fat and a little ugly, but yet sort of endearing...   

I like the A380 but every time I looki at ant pic of her I feel like I'm waiting the swelling to go down, but said that I like the stubby look!

HUGE!!!

This picture drastically makes the South-African A340 on the background shrimp. (If it is a A340?...). The A380 Tail looks twice as big.

The A380 will be a great plane, but beautiful it is not. It looks like a guppy that spent too much time with Jason Giambi.

For me the most beautiful thing about any aircraft is how seemingly effortlessly they fly, no matter how huge or ugly they may be. Maybe one day we can appreciate the A380 in this way.   

The all white fuselage doesn't do it justice, i find a lot of all white planes look crap.

I'm getting used to her though. She isn't the prettiest plane ever (that's the A345 or 747) but she's not offfensive to my eyes.

Long live the DC-10 and MD-11!!!!

I get a good chuckle out of you nea-sayers who think Airbus will send, literally, hundreds of millions of dollar (not to mention a DECADE of time) developing the A380 and the armchair quarterbacks question their engineering continously on these forums.

IMO, WhaleJet is the perfect monicker for the A388, it's perfectly descriptive without being patently derisive.

I think it looks pretty good, though not Airbus' typically gracefulness. I am just excited for aviation this year...we have the 772LR and the A380 to talk about!

Although I have no problem with the A380(which is totally awesome) grace and all that goes to the MD-11 for me...

I seem to remember in a poll last year the MD-11, which economically was pretty disastrous for McDonnell (and arguably the pax airlines which flex it), beat the T7, which is clearly economically highly successful for Boeing and the airlines which fly it, hands down in a "beauty contest".

There is therefore no correlation between success and aesthetics, and no inferences should be drawn on one's view of the A380's success based on an opinion on its aesthetics. It is a reasonable position to believe it will be a success for Airbus whilst also believing it is hideously ugly.

I believe it will be successful for Airbus. I believe it is hideous. I will fly it once, but then pay to avoid it because I do not want to be stuck in the air with 550+ other people. My mother works for BAe, who own 20% of Airbus or something like that.

Go figure. Get over it.

I think the A380 bashers are missing the point here, this is a significant event in aviation history, if it looked like a 777 or a A340 you'd all be going

impressive yes. But pretty? Well thats debatable, lets just say nice looking.

To me, as long as it flies, gets me from City "A" to City "B"

1.) The A380 is rather ugly, especially at the front end.   

2.) The A380 is still growing on people, albeit very slowly   

3.) All-over white is defintely not the A380's colour   

4.) The nose is truly terrible. I agree an upper deck flight deck would have been a much better design.   

5.) The DC-10, MD-11, 777, 747 & 757 will always be better looking.   

6.) Let's see what she looks like in Korean Air livery

Well I think she's something very special indeed a real beauty in my eyes and I am very proud of Airbuses Flagship. Nice to think the UK made those sexy wings and those powerful engines. I used to look at her differently though, during construction, she wasn't very glamorous at all, in fact I wondered at one point what exactly was being constructed. She looked her worst prior to the engines being installed and with that red nose and green bodywork. However, slap on the makeup just like my wife and Wow, I quite fancy her ! Seriously though, I think once we see her in other airlines schemes she will look sensational. So I guess she's not Catherine Zeta Jones , more a Dolly Parton, but I just love her ! Well done Airbus !
I think the B747SP is a real monstrosity over the A380 any day.

Here I ask something that has probably been answered a thousand times... oh, well... Anyway: why the smoke? I know you always get something like that when you run a new engine, I suppose there is something left in the manufacturing process that just burns off... But, what exactly is it?

Well there are quite a few sucessful ugly airplanes out there as well as beautiful ones. Take the PC-6 Porter or DeHavilland Beaver. They have the sex appeal of a dirty old pickup truck however they are exremely useful and are beautiful to those who fly them. I agree the A380 is not the best looking but the name of the game is profit not what plane will get you chicks. And far be it from me to ask, but how the hell would A.netters know what picks up chicks, I think our hobbists as a whole rank just above Trekkies and Train Buffs in the scoring department. Regarding the flight deck location, I imagine it would be a helluva lot easier to land and taxi with the cockpit on the lower deck rather than the upper deck.

The first time I saw a Connie I thought it was the weirdest looking aircraft. I think any aviation enthusiast would agree that it is one of the most amazing and classiest looking airliners in history. A timeless classic with so much indiviuality there is nothing quite like it.
The A380 looked strange in the beginning, but I reckon it's a real grower and, while it doesn't have the individuality of the Connie, it is unique. I'm SO glad Airbus went for this design

Although I'd love to fly it someday, just to say I did. But since I never even was able to fly a 747, I doubt I'll ever get to be on an A380.

The A380 will never have the elegance of the 747. It may turn out to be more efficient, it may (and probably will) turn out to be a technically superb airliners, but it will never have the elegance of the original jumbo.

That's the best photo of the A380 so far. It shows the A380 off in it's entirity well, without being an Arty-farty shot. Awesome in the true sense of the word.

I cannot see how people get excited about the A330 and B777: to me they are, along with all the other Airbus and Boeing twins, among the most BORING looking aircraft. YAWN!!!!! Give me the TriStar (probably IMHO the most beautiful looking airliner), the VC10, the TU-154, Concorde, B747 and now the A380, anyday!

In my opinion Airbus makes the least attractive airliner around; the A380. I mean, it is short (relatively speaking), fat and just plain ugly.

In my opinion, Airbus makes the most beautiful plane in the skies today, the A340. To watch the airliner decend from a mixture of clouds and sunlight into Seattle-Tacoma is like watching an angel decend from heaven.

Are you talking male or female queen? Because the A380 looks more like a King (Big, fat, round, and the a ire of power)(Also doesn't move much while commanding a lot of attention) My history books show Queens or prospective Queens like Princess Diana to be sleek, and having the right curves.

The best views are all from the rear.. You know song by Queen "Fat Bottom Girls, you make the rocking world go round..."   

The front view makes the plane look like Homer Simpson.

It is really amazing how big the tail is. Also, in these latest shots, the wheels don't look so puny anymore.

The wingspan is astounding (not one of the pictures includes the whole wing span.)

Okay, so she's not a Spitfire, or an A330, or Concorde, or, dare I say it, the MD-11    but for a double-decker, I find her rather, uh, purdy. Especially when one compares her to the stretched upper deck 747 models, which to me are too squarish. This is one I'm looking forward to.

BTW. when the first metal boat was built, I think people thought it'd never float. Face it guys, this baby's gonna FLY.

I can understand people not being used to the low cockpit and finding it strange, but I reckon we'll get used to it pretty quickly, but Nomad is right here: I can't think of any airliner with the grace of those wings. Maybe I'm a freak, but I actually like the short fuselage and think the proposed -900 version makes it look more mundane.

Aesthetically speaking, as been said it will probably take time for people to appreciate it. I'm sure if you see it in person, one would be so mesmerized by the shear size that they'd forget about its outer appearance.

The A380 does sort of look like someone driving an office building around the taxiway with some wings stuck on, but i'll bet she fly just fine.

And I'll bet next year A.netters will be thrilled to fly on it.

Excellent point Jafa39! Most people complain for the sake of complaining, and this is an excellent topic to do it obviously!

The A380 will bring into new concepts and thinking in commercial aviation. Despite that it looks like an Airbus A318 and an Antonov An-225 mated and this is its offspring, I think it'll prove the test of time just like the 747 did.

Airbus raised the bar with fly by wire technologies and less expensive products, which has made Boeing become more innovative and thoughtful in their product development. Competition is good for both manufacturers and for us! I look forward to seeing the 787 and the A380 both fly and succeed!

I don't think Airbus is using that as a design consideration. The 747 is what she is. The A380 is what she is. Both have/will meet the market they were created to serve.

Airlines don't purchase airframes based on their aesthetic value...but their commercial value. And if Airbus hasn't fudged the numbers and truly delivers what they promise, the airlines will be very happy with their operation of the "great white whale, big ugly, etc." Its the green that they care about.

As you said at the beginning of your post, "Beautiful she is not. Fly she will." I'll add to that "great seat per mile costs, exceptional revenue potential, and so on.

There is a part of me that says to the airline executives, name your planes...Moby, Jimmy Duranti, and so on. Take the negative people and make fun of their complaints about the A380s appearance.

The A380 is actually growing on me. The nose is still one of the ugliest noses for a jetliner that I've ever seen. But as for the rest of the plane, it's slowly looking better. Although, the thing is downright frightening to look at from directly behind, or directly in front. It only looks good from the side. That rear pic with all those cars following, really doesn't do the A380 any favors in the looks department from behind.


I really want to fly on this thing. And I want to sit on the upper deck, right where the tail joins the fuselage.

I've always wanted to see a double-decker jet with a full upper deck. Now we finally have one, and I'll sit happily at the back of the upper cabin, enjoying my first A380 flight when that day comes.


Too bad it can't get a facelift though... 


And yes, it's a Manatee. That's a perfect way of describing the nose of this plane. I love the tail though, the tail and full upper deck are what redeem this aircraft for me.

I'm almost disappointed that the 747A isn't a direct competitor. I want to see a 747 with full upper deck.

Don't worry, I've been in Filton many times (my handle might tell you why....) and know that Filton is just as instrumental to the wings as Broughton is. However, technically speaking..

This thread is all about the aesthetics of the A380, so that is what Yoda commented on. I agree that airlines are finding the A380 to have a good business case with excellent economics, but it still looks like it needs to go on a diet.

From behind is DEFINITELY not the best angle to photograph the A380.

The a-380 looks better than i thought it would. im still a 747 fan and i love the dc-10/mf-11 and L-1011 but even though the exteriro of the a380 isent the best i still cant wait to get inside one itll be great

no not sexually but the inside will be very nice as in ife and seats and whatever other things the airline puts in like duty free shops and so on
