I have been very courious for a while now, on what domestic routes that mainline United once handled before handing them over to their Express affiliates to operate with their Regional Jets in the past few years or so?

Surely I'm wrong, but I can't think of any IAD UA phase-outs in the last few years. In recent history IAD has always had about 3x as many UAX flights as UA flights.

UA does seem to continuosly tweak the schedule in the Northeast... LGA, BDL, BOS switch between UAX and UA on different frequencies. MSY and DFW has gone back and forth a few times too.

I like your handle IADCRJ...I think IAD is getting close to having the largest CRJ operation in the World! IAD is now up to the fifth (from 17th 2 yrs. ago)largest airport in terms of a/c movement and I'd say almost all of the increase in the last few years has been regional jets.

In the mid to late 90's, IAD saw United mainline service to/from several markets in the afternoon to connect with its European flights. Off the top of my head, I remember a few:

IAD-ROC-BUF (operated with 732's, 733's, and 72S's)
IAD-DTW (operated with a 732)
IAD-ATL (operated with a 732)
IAD-MSY (operated with a 732)
IAD-FLL (operated with a 72S)

Granted this is still a mainline run, but I remember when IAD-MIA was operated with a 747SP and ran CDG-IAD-MIA-EZE.

I believe that mainline United still operates only one daily 737 on this particular run, but I know for fact that the rest are operated using a CRJ200 (operated by AWAC) and a ERJ170s(operated by Chautauqua).

Used to have 1 or 2 733's IAD-PHL here and there along with ACA J31's and J41's. Now it's 5 CRJ's a day.

I believe Mesa operates all of these PHL runs from IAD now using their 200s. About a year ago until this past summer, they also operated a CR7 on this route aswell.

Didn't United use to use mainline to RDU from IAD/ORD?

Add Austin Texas to the list (737s.... now CRJ-700s).

RDU-IAD has always been Express with everything from J32's to 146's now. RDU-ORD did used to be all mainline with a mix of 72S's, 737's, and occasionally a 752. Several of the RDU flights ran through GSO, ie ORD-GSO-RDU-ORD.

One more to add to my list above...IAD-CLE operated with a 73S.

Back around 1987 they had mainline service to most major cities in the East from IAD. They flew nonstop to IND, SDF, ORF, RIC, PHL, ROC, BUF, LGA, EWR, BDL, BOS, MDW, ORD, DEN, PBI, FLL, MIA, TPA, MCO, JAX, CHS, ATL, MSY, SAV, CLE, BTV, PWM, PHX, LAS, SFO, LAX, PVD......probably a bunch more but this is just off the top of my head. Commuter (United Express) service was just that....commuter flights, to places like SHD, HSP, EKN, MGW, SBY, IPT and others.

Another one that recently came to my head is IAD - DFW. Used to operate using 733s and A319s, but I believe now this route is operated all by Chautauqua's ERJ 170s.

ORD Yes, IAD I can't recall that far back...

RDU did have hourly J41's and eventually hourly CRJ's to IAD right before 9/11. I actually have an old UAX/ACA poster promoting the hourly service. It had a cool picture of a UAX CRJ and a motto that said "Raleigh, and step on it!" Then in small print at the bottom it says something like: United Express now has hourly CRJ service to RDU

Currently IAD-MSY has three flights a day: 1 E70 and 2 320's.

The route has never went to all-Express flying.

Did mainline United ever handle the IAD-EWR, IAD-JFK, IAD-PVD, IAD-MCI, IAD-STL, IAD-MSP routes?

IAD-PVD used to see mainline 737's in the early 90's.

Yep,UA had a single r/t IAD-ROC-IAD til 9-11 . This was axed after flights resumed,unfortunately.

In 1988 I know they flew mainline 737's from IAD to PIT as well. Most routes were served with 737's along the Eastern Seaboard. EWR-IAD was served with a variety of 767, 727, and 737 equipment. Coast to coast and hub to hub was served with DC-8's, DC-10's, 767's, and 747's.
