Reading the last few lines of the article, it appears GE's patience is wearing down, as they are allowing shorter extensions for putting forth a business plan.
Short of a solid plan or a rapid increase in profits and available cash, GE may eventually pull the plug. If some other group can replace them, US lives on. If not, US disappears.

Ok, if GE pulls the plug, who else could afford to loan US as much cash as they require? US needs a profitable plan. When do we get to see it?

Some speculation in the article: Of course, self-interest is at work. Because it leases so many planes to so many carriers, "It might be argued it is in General Electric's interest that the greatest number of industry participants survive," though not necessarily prosper, Lauer said. Interesting... As large participants in the airline industry have more negotiating leverage, there is a point to this. Does anyone know the interest rate US is stuck with? Is this like the rumors of TWA with the 717's? Lease costs out of proportion to the airframe's worth?

Also, I found it interesting to state: A decade ago, "There was no organization with the power or the interest in preventing the disintegration of Pan Am or Eastern," said UBS airline analyst Robert Ashcroft, in a conference call this month. GE represents a "safety net that did not exist before."
No one else could afford to loan this money is true. Hey, GE can foreclose on sovereign debts... They're smart with their collateral. (Smart is not the same as perfect...)

Lightsaber

Just remember to always take a PG article on US with a grain of salt. John Robinson Block, owner of the paper, has hate US since they cancelled his flight into TOL due to a snow storm many years ago. He vowed to run them out of TOL and everything else.

They can't do this forever. The reason behind it is that they get the ownership of practically all of US Airways assets. But when this starts affecting GE's bottomline, this charity will come to a screeching halt.

GE's position has encouraged other creditors to support US, and in other airlines too.

There's a good reason the plan hasn't been released, which should become apparent very soon.

You mean like how they just ran a big article on the discount carriers picking up the slack for US at PIT...and they were talking about freaking USA 3000 adding a whopping 3 flights per week to MCO?

Nah, they're unbiased. All the PIT rags are.  Yeah sure

I'm lazy and didn't read the article, but if ZW and the other regional is kicking in finance, the US should approach the rest and ask for financing for the "right" to fly as US Airways. On another thread, someone stated that it's like franchising out the US Air name. Could that work?

There will only be one winner, and that will be GE. They are not a charity, and are doing what they need to to protect their money, and future income streams. Ovrall their hit from this will be small in comparison.
