Here is a blast from the past. Pan Am’s flight schedule out of New York JFK in July of 1981. There is some very interesting stuff, e.g., a weekly flight to Monrovia and daily service to Dhahran. I divided flights into international and domestic. I was surprised to see a nonstop to Melbourne FL.

I certainly miss the classic carrier. Enjoy!

Thanks for posting that. Always love getting a look at the old timetables....I was surprised though, their international routes seemed rather limited. Are you including continuing flights (For example, their flight to Istanbul stopped in Frankfurt)?

Why is that? There is presently two nonstops to JFK from MLB and in August there will be three.
MLB of today is 1/10th of what MLB was in the 80's. Presently DL is the only carrier and provides nonstop service to ATL, CVG, IAD, and JFK.

A 727 to Melbourne! L-1011 to Houston. Those were the days!

  

Ironically, you mention 1981 and Pan Am. My best friend’s father (Pan Am 1947-1981). Some seniority, eh? BTW, he was Dhahran-based for a time.

All of the flights I listed were non-stops only. Also in the schedule I noticed allot of cargo flights. For example, cargo (but no pax service ) to BRU, and ORD. I didn't know Pan Am had 747 freighters ... These were designated in the schedule as 747F

If my math is right, 33 flights per day, more or less. The Worldport must have been pretty empty for great stretches during the day....

by the way, my father flew on the Dhahran flight several times. SFO-JFK-DHA in a 747sp, then to Riyadh on Saudia, sometimes an L-1011, other times a 737. He never cared for those trips very much.

This is a great blast from the past. I graduated high school in 1981. My alarm clock/radio was set to NY's WCBS 880 (All news). Every morning there would be a commercial for Pan Am.

The jingle went, "Pan Am, we fly the world the way the world wants to fly." There was also a Northwest Orient advert that went "We give you half the world, on Northwest Orient (rolling cymbal crash) Airlines."

Ahh...good times, good times.
