Topic: WN And SAN Username: UAcosCS Posted 2005-09-01 08:05:54 and read 1782 times. How many flights a day does WN operate out of SAN?
I was visiting Shamu and Sea World on the 31st of August and saw a mustard rocket take to the skies every 5 or 10 minutes, all day. So I have to ask how many flights a day?
Seemed like 25 or 30?

I didnt know they had so many flights. |
Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: Flyboyaz Posted 2005-09-01 08:43:13 and read 1750 times.Yep they have lots of flights. Pretty much a carbon copy of PSA's operation there, plus a few more cities.
Last time I was there the checkin lines were horrendous....took me over an hour to get to the counter...wasn't a pleasant experience. |
Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: MAH4546 Posted 2005-09-01 09:07:42 and read 1736 times.Yes, it is largely thanks to a healthy short haul network from SAN.
Albuquerque - 3x
Austin - 1x
Baltimore - 2x
Chicago/Midway - 4x
El Paso - 1x
Kansas City - 1x
Las Vegas - 14x
Nashville - 2x
Oakland - 18x
Phoenix - 14x
Sacramento - 14x
San Jose - 10x
Tucson - 3x
They also offer on and off seasonal weekend service to Houston Hobby and Reno. |

Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: RobertS975 Posted 2005-09-01 17:21:43 and read 1640 times.WN would probably do OK with more trans-cons out of SAN in addition to BWI... PVD, BDL, ISP, TPA etc. |
Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: GARUDAROD Posted 2005-09-01 17:29:44 and read 1611 times.I'm surprised WN has not duplicated PSA's bread and butter route to
LAX. They link the LA basin with the Bay Area on frequent schedules,
why not link SAN with the LA basin. I know that most of the flights
are now Eagle or Express, but it wasnt always that way. Numerous
B727's and B737s used to fly hourly and there were even DC10s and
L1011s in the mix from the majors. |
Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: N200WN Posted 2005-09-01 17:36:02 and read 1611 times. From SAN Southwest also has (now suspended of course) a SAN-MSY-TPA flight in the current schedule. The flight was being rerouted SAN-HOU-TPA since Katrina but I don't know if that's going to stay that way. I'll check tomorrow when I get back to work and see if that's the plan. The current HOU flight in the schedule is a Saturday only nonstop as is RNO.
SAN to ELP has been drawn down a little from a high of 3 to 4 n/s a day to just 1.
Southwest has pulled out of just two routes out of SAN over the years (three counting SFO), those being SAT and SLC.
The next route for SAN nonstop will be PHL. |
Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: Usairways85 Posted 2005-09-01 21:41:16 and read 1519 times.WN briefly operated PHL-SAN last fall, i believe it was Sat. only though. Don't know when or why the suspended the service |
Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: Silver1SWA Posted 2005-09-01 22:12:12 and read 1485 times. We have 88 daily flights at SAN and the goal is to be over 100 very soon. They are getting ready for full provisioning by converting a portion of the cargo area into a provo room. I heard we need to get over the 100 mark before full provo will be considered. But with all these long hauls we have and the potential to be getting more, we definitely need full provisioning. Right now gate 3 is not in use with the exception of RON aircraft. If they reopen gate three and add a flight or two to each gate throughout the day, we would easily have over 100 flights. Other than that...they can only grow so much given the availability of gates.

On Monday the SAN-MSY-TPA and TPA-MSY-SAN flights went SAN-TPA and TPA-SAN.

Most of the routes are to non-hub airports where there are enough passengers to warrant at least one flight, bypassing hub cities. For frequent fliers, SAN-ELP via PHX is not a problem, but some people will choose SAN-ELP non-stop if they can.
On other routes, such as SLC-SAN, Delta simply has a lock on non-stop passenger traffic. WN acknowledges that, and uses their planes elsewhere.

The economics are simply not there. SAN-LAX on a jet is not feasible anymore. The up-and-down time in a jet (at altitude) vs. a lower flying prop plane gives the EM2's and SF340's a much lower CASM (cost per available seat-mile).
"Shuttle by United" tried SAN-LAX (I flew it once), but it didn't work. Also, United terminal 8 is set-up solely for United Express (meaning most intra-California routes), leaving other gates for United jets to destinations that do make money for United.

Our Skywest flight was packed. I couldn't see a 737 on that route(LAX-SAN)
But they(OO) run a few flights a day down that way.
Don't rent Advantage out of SAN, you will wait up to an hour for their van, only drag of the trip.

Keep in mind the type of operation at SAN when PSA was making money on the LAX runs. Most flights were relatively short and you needed to go to LAX to get any long haul service. With the number of longer flights which have been added at SAN over the past 25 years the LAX feed has greatly diminished and the current OO and MQ flights are more than enough to feed LAX.

Also back in the PSA days the only city in N. California with "high frequency" service was SFO. Back then SJC/SMF/OAK only had about four nonstops per day on average. Compare that with the eighteen OAK nonstops per day now on WN.

Agreed on that one. It didn't seem to take too long to get picked up, but there was a long line at the counter when I had to return the car and that took a while. People were worried about making their flights. They seemed understaffed.

Topic: RE: WN And SAN Username: UAcosCS Posted 2005-09-02 23:09:47 and read 1092 times. We waited about 40 minutes to get picked up, and was so far away compared to other rental companies. The wait to return was faster. Was pretty funny, when we got dropped off, a young guy maybe 26-30 was waiting and he said to the guy" only have one van? Took you 40 minutes to pick us up" I looked at my wife thankful it wasn't just us. |
