The air traffic between the USA and Mexico has been healthy lately, and just got healthier. Countries agreee to three airlines per city pair.

Wow.. some city pairs could have 6 airlines to one Mexican city, and RDU can't even get the 1st airline.. WOW...

LAX, ORD, and JFK to MEX, GDL and CUN will be my guess.

Here are a few more details from the DOT.

City pairs impacted are between any city in the US and Acapulco, Cancun, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Huatulco, Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Loreto, Manzanillo, Mazatalan, Merida, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta and San Jose del Cabo.

Codeshares on any route increases from four to ten.

It also splits Washington and Baltimore into 2 separate markets opening more opportunities there.

Not fair enough!! CINTRA holds good routes @ MEX.

6A is based at MTY and will sure be affected by this...!!

As always unfair things for all @ our aviation.

Mexico and the United States day by day are getting more and more ties of friendship no matter some people hate this idea!!! Today I met this new nice girl at school which is american... and loves living @ MEX and she says she'll stay here forever...!!!

Does the Mexico's-USA numbers of flights in a day, including all carriers flying, have surpassed the USA-Canada numbers of flights?

JetBlue JFK-CUN? maybe... NYC to Cancun is already full with CO and AA. Now with three airlines, this would be feasible.

This has been debated for a couple of years. I think it has.

Not if DL/Song beats them to it, between AA, CO and DL I don't think B6 will be able to fly any routes to Mexico from NY.

Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City was not included in the agreement per press release due to a very bad congestion problem. Hopefully Toluca airport will take off as a true second gateway (new access highway and passenger terminal built) for Mexico City.

I would expect JetBlue to apply for JFK-CUN and there now doesn't need to be a route case for LAX-CUN applications for second carrier.

Cancun (CUN), Guadalajara (GDL) and San Jose del Cabo (SJD) will be the major winners with this agreement.

We will see a fight for rights to fly:

GDL-LAX between ZE, 6A and JR
SJD-LAX between AM, ZE and 6A

among others...

Sounds really good and aprofitable for mexican airlines, like ZE, 6A and Avolar (airline code  Sad ??) I can imagine 6A or ZE flying MEX-MIA or MEX-JFK... but I can't understand why this new rule between both countries, MEX-LAX is served by AM MX JR and 6A is because MEX is the capital of Mexico or exist another reason for that..... I am a little bit confused..... cheers VIC

Hello all do any of you see now with this new agreement that Aeromexico will try to capitalize on certain markets that they are not in...Like Northern California. I know AM has a codeshare with MX, but I like AM service better. Mexicana has enjoyed all of Nor Cal's Airports SFO, OAK, SJC, SMF. I would love to see Aeromexico in Oakland to GDL, or AM to any other city in Mexico. I love their service. The AM jet would also look lovely in the bay area. Does anyone see Aviacsa moving into the Bay area also.

Excellent news. This is gonna ease up a few competitions (DL and UA competing for LAX-CUN, DL and AA competing for JFK-SJD, DL, FL and NK competing for MCO-CUN). Hope this also means the DOT will be a bit faster in their decisions  Wink .

I really think Jetblue wanted to do JFK-CUN but couldn't because of the restrictions. That will be my first prediction for 2006, JetBlue lands in CUN.

The only reason there are Air Canada flights into Washington National is because those Canadian airports have US Preclearance stations for US Customs and Border Protection.

I can't imagine that preclearance would ever be at Mexico City, which also sits way outside of the perimeter for Washington National service.

OakJam...I'm wishing the same thing for the SF Bay Area airports. I think AM would do well there.

I wonder if this will open the door to the newcomers slated to start service out of Mexico. Maybe the newcomers will change their business plan a bit to include international service.

Also, perhaps this will give impetus for ZE to expand service out of OAK.

Time will tell.

Avolar = A5

MEX-LAX is only served by AM and MX from the Mexican side. No other Mexican airline can fly the route due to the US-MEX bilateral agreement. JR and 6A have flights to LAX from other mexican cities but not from MEX.

It would be cool to see more mexican airlines flying here, including more cargo airlines such as Aero Union, Aeropostal de Mexico.. Im sure some of those start ups and existing airlines could start doing charters to places like MCO, FLL, TPA..

Yeah Victor, but those count only as PVR-LAX and MTY-LAX, respectively, for purposes of the bilateral.

This is really surprising news. I must say I did not see this coming. I need to give this deeper consideration but my first impression is that U.S. carriers are maybe going to benefit more from this amendment to the treaty than Mexican ones. What do you guys think?

Does anyone think AM will start LAX-CUN? It would be nice to see them increase their presence at LAX. MX seems to have them beat and I agree that their service seems to be better than MX's but that has not always been the case. BTW, how many flights does AM have from LAX currently?
I know that DL applied for LAX-CUN but what's the point of awarding it to them when they dismantled all but GDL operations of the old WA flights? Why would HP be awarded this route as well? They have axed all their flights to Mexico from LAX and they were all CR9 flights? I hope UA wins this one.

Quoting Airlineslover (Reply 25):

Can you really consider JR to be a major player in much of anything anymore with those all D9S they fly and many rumors they are going away???

Does anyone have any thoughts or heard of anything about AS starting service LAX-MTY? I think they would do well on this and or maybe LAX-BJX?

Looking good for mexican carriers in some ways...

Not true. A destination must have an FIS to recieve all international flights, even if they are pre-cleared. Look what happened with the AS flight on YVR-SNA. They actually had to divert it because SNA doesn't have any FIS

Canada and the US have open skies. No carrier, frequency or capacity restraints. Six US airlines and three Canadian carriers are flying the transborder network daily, as well as three Canadian charter carriers that I can think of. Even on a route like Vancouver-Honolulu, you will have three Canadian carriers flying daily this winter. Just look at the NYC area. Just off the top of my head, Air Canada flies over 35 times a day from four cities to four NY airports, and will soon add YYC-EWR service. AA and CO operate services from three NY airports to several destinations in Canada.

Hey Eddie.
I agree with you. I think this benefits more the US airlines, than the Mexican carriers. However, I think this will give the Mexican economy a big boost (tourism), and with more competition (lower fares), it will allow many Mexican migrant workers to visit their homeland. My parents get to go to Morelia once in a blue moon because of high fares.
