I believe that LH 458 performed a go around this evening when landing at SFO. Can anyone confirm or does anyone have any specific details?

Yes that's confirmed. I was driving north on 101 past San Bruno mountain around 6:50 pm tonight when I saw an LH A340-600 climbing and turning to the south. That can only mean it was going around.

I got to ride in a go-around back in 1989 flying on a military charter (Fed-Ex, ex-Flying Tigers) 747-200 at CRK. The pilots misjudged the approach and I swear we were doing like 20 degree approach slope! Full flaps, gear down, engines at idle. We were still incredibly high at the threshold, so the pilots did the honorable thing. They even announced over the P/A what was going on as we were climbing out to go around.

I suppose even more disturbing is an aborted t/o - I witnessed a DL 763 abort after about 2000 ft of roll on Runway 08 at SJU back about 10 years ago (Is that restaurant with the viewing deck still open?).

Reason for a go-around at SFO probably was other traffic:
- on the crossing runways
- on the runway destined for the landing or on the parallel one
- closing in too fast onto slower traffic on parallel approach - a not uncommon situation at SFO due to the fact that runways are one 550ft apart (IIRC) where am EMB-120 Brasilia has to speed in order to stay ahead of a B747 (or similar).

I was watching landings at SFO about two months ago and within 30 minutes saw a KLM 777 and an Air China 744 both have to do fly-by's. It was quite a busy morning!

This isnt very big news. Go around's happen many, many times a day.

They were doing a fly by with the Blue Angels.
