Marc Tacchi bought a special $7,000 Air Canada ticket that gave him unlimited flights for 60 days, then set out to fly 1,000,000 miles. He accomplished it, flying 56 out of 60 days. As a million-mile Air Canada flier, he gets vouchers for $70,000 worth of business-class airfares.

He also seems to be a pilot himself:

When he wasn't flying to collect travel points, Tacchi works as a contract pilot. Once a week, he flies a Boeing 747 cargo plane to Europe or Asia.

So he spent $7,000 and got $70,000 worth of vouchers. Are those buy one get one free vouchers though, or straight cash vouchers?

I wonder what distances sales people (take the most relevant one to this website) like Baseler and Leahy fly?

No, he didn't fly 1 million miles. He earned 1 million FF miles including bonuses. He flew about 400,000 miles.

It would have been impossible for him to fly 1million miles in 56 days. IF he flew 20 out of 24 hours per day for 56 days...you multiply it by an average of 500mph (which is pretty high for an average)...then you end up with a max of 560k miles during that period of time!!!

They gave miles on those north american passes?
I find that amazing, with the restrictive manner of FFPs these days.

Actually, in most cases, people who buy those passes lose out on the deal, because you can normally get seperate tickets cheaper than they cost.

He flew about 300+ seperate segments. I doubt that he could have bought all of those tickets for $7,000. But you are quite right....most people do, but not him!

If Airbus had a bad year in terms of total orders, then your joke would be funny...  Yeah sure

Here's Marc's blog about his experiences during the two months.

http://gcmr2005.blogspot.com/

Marc Tacchi is an AC Aeroplan member (AC FF Program) and by doing this he has accumulated enough Aeroplan points to take care of all his flying needs for the next few years. He lives in YVR and commutes to work (ANC, HKG). He acheived Super Elite status in Aeroplan for 2006 with his mileage run and all the benefits that come with that tier level (instant upgrades to J class, etc.)

So can he turn around and sell them?

Two months of time (and forgone wages) and C$7000 dollars+expenses doesn't seem likely to be much more than $C30000. It seems like a good investment with potentially very nice short term return.

He had no lost wages, he has a flexible work schedule and he fit the mileage run in with his work requirements.

And no he cannot sell them, but he has no intention of selling them. He will use the FF points for himselves and family over the next few years and not have to pay for his commuting or vacation flights, plus he will fly business class most of the time.

He does not get $70000 in business class vouchers. His goal was to earn a million aeroplan points and according to what I read in a newspaper article, he intends to USE those points for about 10 round trip first class tickets to Australia. There is no such thing as First or Business Class vouchers that the airline gives out in exchange for points. The points will be good for First, Business or Economy class tickets whatever the member decides.
