The new brand will be called 'Indian' this will be addition to the Alliance Air (CD) brand, which will continue (however the rumours persist that the brand will be killed). The first aircraft featuring this brand will be a A319 and will be unveiled in Delhi on the 7th. The livery will feature the Konark Sunwheel in blue on a Saffron background. 'Indian' will be a no-frills carrier operating on major sectors and will start service by mid-December.

Will it be exclusively A 319, as IC right now only has A 320s? (CD flies 737-200s)

The A319 saga is a bit strange - the planes were initially being taken for Alliance, but now the powers that be have decided to kill that airline and start a new brand which will fly the 4 A319's that arrive between now and mid-2006. God knows how the 43 new A32X's will be distributed.

what about the pilots? Will they be trained for the 319/320s..?

Will this new entity also be entitled to fly abroad and say compete with air arabia or deccan lanka... any idea on that?

No idea as yet, the details will become clear over the next few days. From some reports Alliance pilots have been told that some of them will be absorbed into the new carrier, however I doubt that they'll have any problem finding jobs given the current Indian market.

I'm not surprised - the CD brand has no perceived value at all (IMO).

If you can't beat them, join them!! Good move on IC's side - I guess similar to AIX?

Quoting AirIndia (Reply 3):

I would hope not (since that's an unfair advantage to IC compared to DN, KF, 0S etc.) - but given AIX can fly abroad, I'm sure these guys can as well.

Yes, but hopefully these A319's can reach the further SE Asia destinations without needing a stop-over someplace unlike the A320's.

The choice of the name "Indian" seems to be too strange for a sub brand (I suppose they will get a unique IATA code similar to CD)

How an average person will refer it? Indian Airlines? That would be to confusing with the peer IC.

They could have called it "Bharath" or something like that.

Also I don't see the B732 freighters having crew unless they pay them 50% more than the market value.

folks!! read this. This article makes it quite clear that its not just the A319s but whole of IC is in for rebranding.
Hindustan Times
IA puts on warpaint to appear in ‘Indian’ avatar
As its mint-fresh leased A 319 arrives from Hamburg, Indian Airlines will change its name, motif, colours and maybe to a great extent revitalise itself to be more contemporary. For starters, Indian Airlines will no longer be Indian Airlines but now be called ‘Indian’.

“While there is a clear link to the present, the identity is innovative and fresh. Though the name of the company remains Indian Airlines Ltd, the brand changes completely. The colours and motif are very stylish.”

On December 7, only the new A319 will see the new name and colours atop it, but over a period of time, the entire fleet will see the metamorphosis. The change doesn't stop there. The standard livery will also be altered to enhance the look and feel of the interiors. And the uniforms too will be different.

So this is not related to Alliance Air at all. Just the parent undergoing image makeover. For a moment I thought what will they do with the North East ATRs if they shutdown Alliance Air.

BTW has anyone seen the Indian Airlines/Alliance Air ATRs? I am surprised there are no photos of them anywhere on the Net.

So from what I understand from the article its not that IA is getting a sub-brand but it's rebranding itself. It will be called Indian and will have a new color scheme and all the schbang associated with it.

It's not like Ted is being formed but United is changing it's name and livery.

Is my thinking correct?

However, having seen the track record of indian aviaion reporting, I will only believe when the new a/c is invieled in DEL, whether its Indian (a new sub) or a changed IC...

I personally think 'Alliance Air' is a nice name....IC could have strengthened the brand and rejuvenated it....''Indian" is really hard to understand....ultimately, everyone will just call it 'Indian' airlines.....how will it differentiate from the existing IC??? eg. AI Express is really a distinct name and can be differentiated from the main AI....

God knows, one can never tell with the state-owned carriers, but I do think that some brand consultant (close to either the Congress or PeePee) must have made a ton of money on this deal.
Lets see what IC reveals on Wednesday, I believe the new MD (Vijaynand Tripathi) will also be 'unveiled' at the same presser.

Hey, I never said I don't like IC - I just grab my seat on row Alpha or Foxtrot and stare out the window, then use the sidewall to sleep until they serve those nice tikkas/curries for lunch or dinner and proceed back to sleep and wake up when we're on approach. Prefer the 320's nice legroom compared to 9W.
And IC has the most efficient call-centre of any of the airlines in this country. You should really try them - they were so brilliant when I cancelled and rebooked my DEL-BOM ticket over and over (I was issued six PNR's, my ticket looked like a scrapbook by the end of it) during the deluge in end-July.

I am more or less okay with the call centre but dont have 100% trust on them. They are still learning the ropes! I was once told by those chaps that a, My bags will be checked through from HYD to TRV while connecting via MAA and b, Both boarding passess will be issued at HYD, avoiding the need to recheck in at MAA.

The situation on check in was a, NO BAGGAGE TRANSFER and b, NO through boarding pass -pls recheck in at MAA. If I had believed the call centre, I would have missed my connection for sure since what turned out to be a 3 hour connection turned out to be a 25 min one thanks to the HYD MAA flight being rescheduled. Fortunately I had got some feedback from one of my friends who flew the route earlier that he was not able to through check in, so I had ignored the advice of the call centre and flew with hand baggage only, thereby making the connection in the nick of time.

The problem was the HYD MAA was part of an international flight and IC does not through check on these flights to other domestic points (atleast in MAA) which the call centre chaps were not aware of.

TKMCE - I agree - IC is highly underrated - I think their food is better than Jet's too....  Smile

Unfortunately there are lot of old money, and old middle class who have longer memories. Even as late as 90/91, IC had many corrupt employees. Remember the power of the local IC managers who used to hold back tickets for bribes, favors etc - and whose office used to have lines of businessmen trying to get somewhere? Unbelievably rude staff etc, who lost most of their attitude only after Jet and Sahara were well established.

Even today - look at the premium cabins of IC flights closely and try to see how many are there for free (i.e "guests" of various IC personnel) vs how many paid. Isn't it ironic that - ex-Indian Airlines and ex-Air India people who currently work for Jet/Sahara/etc - get free IC premium class travel "arranged" by some old "friends", when they cannot do the same on the airlines they work for!!! The corruption lives on....

So if the old money, old middle class, and "nouveau-rich" aren't too enamored of IC, only the dehatis, younger generation who are not noveau-riche, and wannabe-Indians (who will have to ask their Indian friends what dehati means), are IC's target market? If so, it is about time IC rebranded and did a make-over!

Some of it is actually legitimate. When Jet started off, they enticed some of the best talent in IC (and IC did train even during those days, their staff well). Now many of them had their spouses working also in IC and who chose to continue in IC. Now that is called best of both worlds!

TKMCE - true, some of it is legitimate, but the behaviour I am talking about is ex-AI folks and their families - none of whom work at IC past & present, getting confirmed premium space as "favours" on a routine basis. That ranks as theft to me.
In any case, I do believe that IC is better managed than AI at the moment, but they have an uphill battle competing with the private guys who (for whatever reason) are winning the marketing battle.

Isn't the Ashok Chakra in the Indian flag and symbolizes continuity and dynamicness (and not stagnation)? I fail to see how its "hinduism" ... everything created is by someone who is of some religion ... along your lines, everything is then religious. I like the new look - its very symbolic of IC - continuity and dynamicness in a everchanging industry and country. More pics anyone?

Yup, totally agree. And rather than giving it relegious overtones, I would say that it reflects our heritage. It is supposed to be influenced by the Konark sun temple, and reflects the "symbolises timeless motion and trust that has stood the test of time," according to Praful Patel, Indian civil aviation minister.

Indian Airlines becomes 'Indian'

Saw that whilst flicking through the foreign news channels this afternoon, an excellent departure from the dour IC branding of the past.

Those pictures above don't do it justice, it's a very fresh looking colourscheme. Good luck to IC with their rebranding and forthcoming IPO as a step towards commercial independence.

Until I see up close and personal I can't really say

Agreed. But look at the most recent photos that have been posted. Oh my effing God! What a perfectly ghastly looking plane that is. Vomit!

So, is this a sub-brand? Or is the entire airline going to be re-branded?

the "Indian" from Hindi side reminds one of "Indian Oil"

Personally, I think it's really striking--much nicer than the old livery!

My two cents:

Quite the improvement! They could have used a somewhat thinner and "exotic" font and made the titles bigger for the full billboard effect. As overused as the billboard style is, in some situations it just works.

Also should have left the engines plain, but they don't look too bad. It's a nice effect.

Overall, looks great.

Great pictures on IC's website ... surprised they are so quick about updating it. I really think it looks good ... check out the picture of the 319 taking off.

That really is a fantastic livery, bold and very sharp. Even the word "Indian" looks good in the Devanagiri script.

IC really got it right.
