TF-FIJ has entered service again after having winglets fitted to it's wings in the US.

A total of 7 Icelandair 757's will be modified this winter. More will probably follow. Each jet will be out of service for 3-4 weeks while the modifications are performed.

I don't know if TF-FIJ made a scheduled flight on it's way back to Iceland but, I'm pretty sure that the first Iceland-Europe flight with winglets was FI542 to Paris CDG on December 19th. A friend of mine was on that flight and was very surprised to see the winglets.

Nice to see they added some paint and their logo to the winglet, makes it look even better!

Asgeirs,
Do you know which tail numbers will get the winglets? I believe that Icelandair owns only 5 of their 15 757-200 series aircraft (and the one 757-300).

Thanks,

I saw it then as Icelandair a/c parks just outside our ops office and was very surprise to see the winglets.

They actually only own two of the 757-200's, TF-FIN & TF-FIO as well as the -300, TF-FIX. Some of those they don't own are aircraft they bought originally but sold to leasing companies later. They have an option for 15 installations in addition to those that will be modified this winter so I presume they plan to have all their aircrafts, owned or leased, modified.

Just curious, but when a jet is out of service this long for the installation, is there other work that can be accomplished concurrently? I'm thinking interior mods/upgrades, minor repairs, etc.

It seems like a long time to have an aircraft out of service - the revenue loss over 21 days has got to be pretty significant, and would play into the longterm savings calculations I'd think.

This is true, but keep in mind that winter is Icelandair's offseason, so if a lessee wasn't found for the aircraft, it might have been sitting anyways.

Had a chance to see the plane at GSO (where the installation took place at TIMCO). Must say that it looked real sharp - one of the sharpest winglet schemes I've seen out there.

One month ago I saw this plane while it was in the factory at GSO... I was impressed by the dimension of those winglets (at that time still at the ground).

Nice to see that it's back on service now!

A most excellent addition to FI's aircraft! But, wouldn't it be more appropriate to use the wingleted birds on Iceland-USA runs, such as KEF-MSP? Or am I just too selfish and want to see a 757 with winglets in MSP?  Wink Also, maybe I'm not asking this question properly, but how long does a sector on a wingleted 757 have to be now in order to realize fuel savings?

Acidradio,

This aircraft will without doubt be used on Iceland-USA legs as well. Most of Icelandair's aircraft operate both ways over the Atlantic from Iceland. A particular aircraft usually departs from Iceland in the afternoon to the US and returns back in the morning before departing shortly thereafter on a Europe flight. TF-FIX, the 757-300 is an exception as that aircraft is mostly used on the London and Copenhagen routes and is seldom seen in the USA I think.

I can't wait to see a 57 with winglets installed, which will be very soon, as the company I work for will be installing the winglets for Icelandair starting on January 2....

hmm I think its nicer then the CO and AA winglests but it still looks strange. I guess it needs more time for me. I think it have something to do with the fairly srights landing gear. or something.

Do you think UPS or maybe DHL with fit them on there 757Fs?

Probably not. Winglets only prove their worth on longer missions. They reduce induced drag so makes it more efficient on cruise. For short hops they only add weight to the aircraft.
