I know 777ER will be creaming himself over this so I am proud to let you know that our newest 777 ZK-OKC, arrives on 21st January. It will be doing a famil/test flight to WLG on the 25th January. So get your camera's out.

WLG staff should have the chance to have a look inside and test out our new IFE and seating. The date may change, but at the moment that is what I have been told.

Damn..... Lived in Wellington all my life and moved to Australia 9 months ago. Oh well that will be impressive and hopefully someone will capture the moment.

I did manage to video G-YMMO BA777-236 both landing and taking off in Feb 2002.

NZ1 when you get a confirmation of date please post it. I'm flying back to WLG (via 777 SYD AKL of course) early Feb. Maybe it will be OKC.

Thanks for posting info

Cool, another widebody to WLG! How long has it been since the last widebody?
Where will it be flying in from?

Oh yea, oh yea, oh yea. Thanks for the awesome news mate. I'm sure I could come up with an excellent reason to get away from work for a few hours that day. Is there any idea yet on how long it will be there for? Better put the camera on charge once I get back to work in a week from leave

Quoting Planemanofnz (Reply 2):

Last wide body would be a B763 last year with a diplomatic chinese flight.

Probably for a few hours. Same as was done in CHC with ZK-OKB last year.

Cook Straight Crosswinds any problem for a plane that large at WLG?

I lived in beautiful Wellington for ages too, but don't understand why it's a big deal to see the B777 there. They are old hat in Melbourne and Sydney - and Auckland. I saw the AirNZ B777 the other day in Auckland. A lovely big plane - but only worth a second look because of being a local. Pity the B777 in AirNZ livery looks a bit like the icecream van that used to trawl the Wellington hills. The old TEAL scheme was far more attractive.

A BA B772 was based in WLG for about 5 days during the Queens visit in 2001. Every one driving to/from WLG had a good view of it parked beside the International terminal

Well as your an ex Wellingtonian then you would know that WLG rarly gets wide-body aircraft and when it does then people come and watch it land/take off. When WLGs runway and terminal upgrade is completed in 2007 then expect B777s

That Chinese 763 departed WLG for HLZ. Or rather THOSE 763s. There was a test run a week before the 'real' flight with the Chinese premier.

Whenever WLG wide bodies are discussed I recall sitting in the Koru Club waiting to depart for CHC, looking up, and watching with astonishment as that diverting UA 747 landed.

Who is planning to go into WLG with 777s? Would it be EK or something?

Theyre rumoured to have shown interest in WLG and it would have to be an existing a/c, so could well be them. However I think most of it is the WLG airport company talking it up.

Quoting Planemanofnz (Reply 2):

We talking about scheduled services? Because if not then we had a few here last year, diversions from AKL - all NZ from what I saw. Man they rocket down that runway! suppose they need to to try and miss that big wet thing at the end of the runway.

Gutted! Will be in the Gold Coast. Its almost worth ditching though for the 777.

EK is rumored to be one of them, with either A330s or B777s (not sure if EK A330s serve Australia thou), one or two other airlines have also hinted interest

WIAL will be having B777 capiable gates, so you can expect B777 at WLG, but maybe not A340s at WLG thou

I all honesty, I don't think that many airlines other than EK would fly such a large aircraft on scheduled services into WLG.

And the weather risk is HUGE the fog and the wind. And if the have to fly a few extra hundred km's i dont think services would last long.

If EK were to fly to Wellington, they'd wait until they've taken delivery of their new mid size twins - whether Boeing or Airbus.

IMHO of course

Looking forward to the Triple7 visit!

I actually have to agree now that seeing the big white NZ bird in WGT would be something special! My opinion was probably coloured by my annoyance that NZ took so long to get the B777. Hopefully somone will take some good photos. NZ's purchase of B787 as well as the B777's was a great decision. Thank you for the fantastic news about extension to WGN! Especially if that means bringing EK to Wellington as well. I would be one of the 1st passengers I think. The introduction of the B777 to WGT would be important also for its freight capacity. A beautiful plane - but surpassed, for sheer comfort , IMHO, by the EK A340-500 that has for now replaced their B777's on the the MEL-AUCK run. The plane EK will undoubtedly use into WGT as soon as they can will be the B787-10 - probably a better fit for AUS-WGT than the B777-300ER. I used to live in Roseneath and loved listening to and watching the NZ DC8's climb away from WLG. It's a breathtaking airport, a bit landing on an aircraft carrier, by way of a short trip through a washing machine. Once landed, then a few short minutes by car into the centre of the city, one of the loveliest on earth.

Good to see the plane will be going there.. Will be interesting to watch it land and take off given that the runway there is fairly short...

Not at this time. Details still being worked out with Boeing I believe. TG992 may have something from scheduling though.

I just want to stress that the primary purpose for ZK-OKC going to WLG is firstly to test it as a diversion port, and secondly to allow staff to view it. There is NO intention in the medium/long term to operate to/from WLG with the 777. I get the feeling from a few posts that people think the visit is connected with the start of ops from WLG, when its not.

I also higly doubt that EK will be flying scheduled services in the medium term as well. Just a little rumour I heard from my trusty EK ramp engineer in AKL. However, don't be suprised to see it for the world cup in 2011.

I'm hoping it arrives over Evans Bay (Wellington harbour) as this area IMHO currently provides the best viewing spots. Cook Strait end isnt any good now cause of the runway works currently underway

NZ1 seeing as your up with the play can you confirm it's still off to WLG on the 25th? I have infront of me the schedule's for OKA, OKB and OKC for the next week and WLG doesn't get mentioned at all (for any aircraft). On the 25th I show OKA in SFO, OKB doing a SYD trip before heading to SFO and OKC operating to SYD the BNE. Has there been a change of plans (I would phone ops and ask but am not at work for a few days)?

I haven't been at work for the last week, so am unable to confirm. When I left, it was set down to go to WLG on the 25th. This may have changed. I will try and phone a contact in ops tomorrow and find out.
