I am inspired by the following thread: "The Bus" Flies Home In A Boeing (A 767!) (by D L X Feb 7 2006 in Civil Aviation)

I read there that the Steelers are flying on US Airways and that the Seahawks have their own 757.

But what airlines are the other NFL teams using? Do they always charter a complete plane or do they also use regular flights? And which teams have their own private aircraft like the Seahawks?

Is there an official airline for the Pro Bowl? How are the players getting to HNL next Sunday?

Patrick

DL does a lot of charter for both college and pro football, but any airline has probably done such a charter at some point - there are a.net photos of Hooters Air football charters. Since an entire team, with coaches, trainers, cheerleaders, and all is going to be well over 100 people, any football team would probably always charter rather than trying to buy seats.

The 'Hawks don't really have their own private aircraft, IIRC - they just get flown around on one of the two identical corporate 757s owned by Paul Allen, the Microsoft billionaire who owns the Seahawks. With only 16 games in the regular season, it's probably not cost-effective for a team to own its own aircraft, although many teams or owning organizations have bizjets for management.

The Detroit Redwings and Detroit Tigers share a DC9 painted in their respective team logos.

For football there are only 16 games with only 8 being away from home, which makes having a separate plane less useful, but other sports have far more games and more travel required.

You are right, I didn't think about the additional people beside the players.

Wow, that's a pretty big plane, not bad.

Thanks for the info!

The Philadelphia Eagles flies NW to their away games; usually in a 752 but they have occasionally flown in NW DC-10s & 747s. No Eagles' flights on NW 753s or A330s as of yet, but that could change next season should NW retire their DC-10s.

The New England Patriots, I believe, fly DL usually in either a 763 or a 764; they might have occasionally flown in DL's 777 as well.

This one is well covered and comes up every year at the start of football season.

The New Orleans Saints fly DL. So does the LSU Tigers football team. The Hornets have their own 727.

The Arizona Cardinals which claim to be a NFL team; used a Northwest 752 this past season. In the past they used America West, but for some reason and despite having an theme aircraft, they changed carriers and according to an article in the Arizona Republic the team didn't even have the couresty to inform HP that the contract wouldn't be renewed.

The Packers have used NW frequently in the past, often on 757s (not sure whether the 752 or 753).

One of the guys that works with my uncle got the honor for next season as a check airman, Captain, and top 3% senority, to fly the Chicago White Sox to away games. Since they are the World Series Champs now they got an a/c upgrade, a 752 courtesy of AA.

Does anyone now how charters work? Who pays who?

He said he thought included in the deal was tickets to the games, but my uncle said when he was doing Dallas Cowboys charters out of DFW, that the flight crew had to be at the airport before the game was over, so they never got to see games live.  Sad

I noticed that when the Seahawks arrived at DTW for the Super Bowl the 757 had Seattle Seahawks titles. Does that aircraft always have the titles or where they put on for the Super Bowl?

It doesn't. It is a boring white 757. The 757 does not belong to the Seahawks but rather is a personal jet for Billionaire and Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen who owns two 757s among other jets. It does not carry titles normally, but with the special season, the Seahawks had their logo applied.

The Titans used to fly Continental when they were the Oilers, but have been using Delta in recent years... a 757 for games close enough to truck the equipment, a 767 when they needed to fly the equipment with them.

I remember last season when the Broncos came for the Christmas day game the UA 767 had to be worked by DGS because Skywest (Who does the UA express work in BNA) didn't have the equipment or trained personnel to handle a 767.

Dunno what the Predators (NHL), Sounds (AAA Baseball), or Kats (Arena Football) do, but those teams would need smaller aircraft if they chartered. I would GUESS that the Preds charter with WN if anyone, since WN has a pushback painted with their logo.

Might the BBJ Clone advertised here also have served a similar function? But with the limited seats, maybe only the team owner, coaches and players got to ride.

Not sure about the Sounds of the Kats, but the Preds use Midwest. They usually have one of Midwest's MD-81s and load/unload over at Signature.

During the last two seasons, the OAK Raiders used ship N592HA "Hunakai" to fly to away games (sad, that great HA on-board service didn't put them into win-win situation!).
During the times off, N592HA was on the scheduled HA trans-pacific flights. When I visited HNL during my Christmas break last December, it was always a treat to see "Hunakai" wearing her Raiders sticker on the fuselage.

I hope that the Raiders are still satisfied with HA and will continue them during the next season as both of them rock!

San Francisco 49ers: Delta 767-400

Side note: they use to use a UAL DC-10 every year. And I mean "a" DC-10. After winning the superbowl in 1981. They used the same plane with the same crew. They then went to a UAL 767 shortly after the DC-10 was retired. The last 2 seasons have been with DL. Sad with UAL being the home town airline.

The Orlando Magic fly in a custom 737-300, which is owned by the DeVos family (of Amway fame), who also own the Magic. The Miami Heat travel in a private 727-200.

Back in the late 1970s, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had their own Boeing 707.
