This is very sad news for their staff, and also sad news for Cardiff.

Yet again an airline has been unable to make a go of scheduled services from the Welsh capital.

At first glance this seems surprising given the large financial sector in Cardiff, government institutions etc. But then again, Air Wales has had somewhat of a scattergun approach to route planning with some frankly odd routes.

Even where routes are feasible, they often nobbled themselves with poor timings or low frequencies.

I flew them regularly on the LCY-CWL run, and they shall be sadly missed.

Wanted to illustrate it with a nice Air Wales picture with the most hilarious caption I have ever read, something like "an aircraft with on its tail a lookalike picture of my mother in law".
Couldn't find it any more though.

Hope indeed Air Southwest, Eastern Airways or FlyBe can pick up some of the business, the more props in the UK the better !

Sad news but they were their own worst enemy.

With odd routings, odder flight timings, - ones which left you asking who would ever use that service at that timing and a propensity for spectacular delays, at least into and out of DUB, which must have limited repeat business.

Now lets worry about the long term future of BD, who have been operating in error mode for some time.

Firstly, I hope those who have lost their jobs at ir Wales find new ones quickly

Secondly, this comes as no surprise. With Air Wales inconsistnecy in their route network and scheduling they had fast become a joke

And finally, well done Eastern getting in before any one else does and taking the most lucrative routes Air Wales flew. And I see CWL-ABZ finally gets the decent service it deserves. As for Air Wales other routes, I doubt anyone wil touch DUB and FR will probably be quite happy. ORK may be a good route for Air Southwest, from both CWL and NQY

Air Wales, who`s main hub was Cardiff(CWL),last week announced cessation of passenger services from April 23rd 2006.
Reasons given were that they were unable to compete against Budget airlines, and spiralling fuel costs.
As somebody who regularly picked up from Air Wales flights, this comes as no major surprise,as delays of 4-5 hrs were a common occurrence on a lot of flights.
When an airline is predicting a 4 hour delay on the 7pm evening flight,at 07.00am in the morning, this i think you would agree,is not an airline you could rely on for a one day business trip.
Also, when an airlines online timetable, differs from the airport timetable, things become rather confusing.
Some of these routes have already been taken over by other airlines, but Cardiff Airport still needs more destinations

Very sad. Just curious are they planning to acquire new aircraft for their cargo operates or have a few of their ATR'S turned into cargo planes? Surprised Aer Arann has not announced CWL- DUB.

The CWL-DUB route is already operated by FR, which operate 13x weekly. Aer Arran already have CWL-ORK and CWL-LRT, maybe if these routes perform well they will open a CWL-DUB route.

As said above, the CWL-CDG service will be operated by BMIbaby, 2x daily.

Chris

That's very good news, they are going to have quite an extensive program at CWL in the Summer.

Eastern Airways will also be basing aircraft which will mean jobs for ex Air Wales staff. If all goes well with the Aer Arran routes to ORK and LRT they may possibly base aircraft and expand also.

Chris

Aer Arran where going to fly CWL-DUB, along with CWL-BHD but never got around to even publishing a schedule. More than likely it was intended as retaliation for Air Wales planning to start WAT-Rennes

I doubt it. Aer Arran announced it but when Air Wales dropped it, Aer Arran went very quiet about their plans to operate the route

This will be a significant loss to the CWL route network. Air France would seem logical to take it over, but I doubt they will to protect KL to AMS

I think that maybe with a BFS servive with BMIbaby, that there is no need for a BHD service. Although, maybe BE may be interested at CWL?

As someone said, AF may operate the route. However, we could see BE start the route if they open up at CWL. RE and Air Southwest may also be options if all goes well with their routes that they are going to operate. The CWL-CDG route does very well and is definitely needed, I am sure that an airline will take up the route.

Chris

I think it will be a long time before Flybe look to CWL for expansion. CWL simply doesn't appear to offer the opportunities required with BMIBaby already present.

Flybe will maybe look further to NQY for flights with expansion from EXT/BRS. The EDINQY is apparently proving quite a success and with this in mind I could see routes ex GLA/BHD/MAN/NCL/BHX as possibilities in the future.

Re Paris - There is talk on the airliner world/key publishing forums that WW will reopen the route in winter when they have the aircraft. Meanwhile, this summer, LBA-CDG (on bmi regional) will increase to 4xDaily to keep the CDG slot

Quoting Christa (Reply 29):
I think that maybe with a BFS servive with BMIbaby, that there is no need for a BHD service.

BHD is a lot closer to Belfast city centre, an advantage over BFS. Therefore it would be better, for potentially high yielding business travellers, to have BHD services. The question is, are there enough high yielding business passengers to make CWL-BHD work?
