A search crew found the wreckage of a Cessna aircraft early Sunday in the interior of Vancouver Island near Port Alberni.

The RCMP said two men, the pilot, 59, and a passenger, 56, died in the crash.

Their names were not released, but both were from Port Alberni.

Their four-seat Cessna was owned by the Alberni Valley Flying Club.

The four-seater left Gibsons, on the mainland near Vancouver, on Saturday night and headed for Port Alberni.

The wreckage was found near Horne Lake, about 13 kilometres from Port Alberni, after an all-night search. The area is very rugged and inclement weather overnight hampered search efforts.

Searchers were aided in the hunt by the aircraft's emergency locater beacon.

The investigation of the crash has been turned over to the Port Alberni RCMP.

Port Alberni is about 180 kilometres from Victoria.
