Yes I remember, those were 727's and had "Whisperjet" painted on them.

Whisperjet? Sam Kinison's act must have been completely inaudible to the guy who named that plane.

Well compared to 707s, DC8s and worst of all VC10s, the 727s actually were whisper jets. Now they can't compare to Avros and are some of the loudest planes around now, but 40 years ago, the 727 was a pretty quiet plane.

This doesn't answer your question, but you may find it interesting. On councourse D there are three jetways that came from Eastern and still have Eastern's colorful orange, yellow, brown, and blue panels. If you close your eyes you can pretend you are boarding an Eastern airplane. I forget the gate numbers, but they are the first ones on the left as you come out of security.

EA used to do SDF-EVV-ATL too. I remember doing this in the 80's sometime and continuing on to SAV from ATL.

I believe this flight continued on to MIA, as did the earlier listed Tampa flights. For whatever reason, IND was never connected with IAH or CLT two secondary EA hubs.

Eastern also flew from Phoenix to Indianapolis for a very short time. Maybe 2 - 3 months at the most. The also started Phoenix - Cleveland but that was short lived too. This was in response to US entering the market. This was just after deregualtion 1983 - 85

How profitable was Eastern with all of its "small hubs" and "rare" routes, i.e. PHX-IND, EVV-SDF, etc.?

not surprising. EA did a lot of those types of routes for short periods of time trying to increase east/west flying and guard against upstarts which US Air (even though now classified as a legacy carrier) certainly was in the mid 1980s as compared to EA who was either the #1 or #2 largest US carrier from the 1970s up until 1986.

EA also had an evening flight from MSP to IND. I don't recall any longer where it went to from IND (maybe CLT or CVG?????)

I think the morning flight went up to MSP around 10 Am. MY brother in-law worked near MSP when I lived in Indy.This would have been 80-86.

Inside of most Eastern jetways, the walls had alternating panels of blue, orange, and brown. Some may have had yellow too. Imagine walking through a giant roll of blue, brown, and orange LifeSavers. Most of the jetways you see today are simply white or grey inside, but Eastern's were colorful 70'ish looking. Those jetways still exist in IND on the D concourse. They are the gates that usually service US AIRWAYS EXPRESS RJ's.

I thought those were new ones...for a while they did not have any jetways on the left side of the concourse (if you stand looking toward the runways)...

Yes those are the ones. They may be new to the airport, but they came from somewhere else and had been used by EASTERN. One of the agents at US AIRWAYS EXPRESS in IND has been working at IND since the 1950's. He previoulsy worked for EAL. It's funny seeing him in the old EASTERN jetways. He probably feels like he has gone back in time.

What routes did EA serve around 1967? In that time frame as a very young kid we did flights from HOU and made our way to IND. I have no clue what stops we had getting to IND.

Eastern's Indianapolis op was the primary domain of the DC-9-30 and DC-9-50, except to Florida, those were 727-200s. (Rule of thumb)

Here's a few more years of Eastern @ Indianapolis:

1972 || 12 Daily || D93/D95/722

3X Atlanta
2X Chicago/Midway
1X Chicago/O'Hare
3X Louisville
1X Miami
1X Minneapolis
1X Orlando

1964 || 11 Daily || 720/LOE/D7B

1X Atlanta
1X Chattanooga
6X Chicago/O'Hare
2X Louisville
1X Nashville

1958 || 26 Daily || 404/CVR/L4G/D7B

9X Louisville
2X Atlanta
1X Nashville
1X Birmingham
11X Chicago/Midway
2X Chicago/O'Hare

When the 727 first entered into the Eastern Fleet, it was called; "The Quiet One".....Whisperliner came with the hockeystick livery.

For the 1972 schedule above, Eastern had 6 L1011s in the fleet.
They operated on these routes:
ATL-JFK
ATL-TPA
MIA-JFK
JFK-ATL
JFK-MIA
JFK-MCO
JFK-SJU
JFK-PBI
MCO-ATL
SJU-JFK
TPA-ATL
PBI-JFK
