Hi everyone,
I am thinking of booking a Varig flight between LHR and CPH in August but am obviously concerned that they may be defunct by then
What do you all think? is it worth the risk?

Varig has cancelled 13 flights out of the Rio airports today, Thursday June 15. Varig will not survive much longer...but how many days, weeks, months have we said this?

Varig is bleeding out.

I saw a booth for Varig Airlines at a Brazil tourism promotion show in Grand Central Station in New York City and wondered why they were there at all considering their status.

Most likely you would become a creditor.

Absolutely not. Booking BA or SAS would assure you the company you are flying will still be flying in August.

Varig is on life support. They could stop flying today.

I would definetly not book with Varig. So many flights being canceled.

Now, why is Varig canceling all these flights? I'm sick of ANAC and Varig owns excuse. Is this because their loads are very low?

Book the flight under a SAS ticket and flight code.

Jfazzer, if you want to travel on Varig due to the chance of flying a widebody on such a short route, then I would reccomend an alternative  Smile

KLM operates a mix of 763's and 332's into LHR daily from AMS, why not fly LHR-AMS-CPH  Smile

Kazzie just posted an excellent report here:
KL LHR-AMS-CP, Big And Upfront! (by Kazzie Jun 15 2006 in Trip Reports)

Personaly I would love to fly Varig, but if they are in major doubt then I wouldnt!

If you are set on flying Varig, then take these guys advice from a.net  Smile

Rob!  wave

RG (or better said Nordeste and Rio Sul) recently returned three aircraft to their lessors: B737-300 PT-MNE and B737-500s PT-SSN & SSO. I think the total number of aircraft between the two subsidiaries is something like 10.

RG itself is now down to 21 737-300s from about 25 at the start of the year. 767s, only 3 or 4 left now, and MD-11s, nine, down from 12 at the start of the year.

Saludos,

ZXV

Did I just understand Band News on the radio to say that RG has cancelled 87 flights tomorrow, Friday? I barely caught it as I was getting into my car here in Sao Paulo. Maybe my 11 years of Brasilian Portuguese is nothing to brag about!

Yeah, my Portuguese is playing tricks. Since last Friday, the airline has cancelled 82 flights total. Sorry folks for the wrong info.

Wow,
Thanks for all your comments guys, Your not very hopeful are you?
The real reason I want to take this flight is purely to get on the MD-11 whilst I still have a chance
I actually booked a flight last year between AMS and CDG with RG and low and behold they cancelled it. (Ended up on Air France A320!)

Oh well I might still take the gamble, Got to be it in to win it!

I don't think SK codeshares on the flight, though BD might.

Well worth it. I have been on RG's MD-11 many times on routes of LAX-GRU and GRU-MAO about 6 times. Moments I will never forget.
