Topic: Is The 777 Canabalizing The 747?

Will the 777 (especially 200ER's and 300's) make 747's obsolete? I'd sure hate it if it did. The 747-400 is my aircraft of choice for international long-haul travel. I'd hate to see, say, BA replace it's daily 744 services LAX-LHR with 777's. I'd be so dissapointed.

What do you think?

It probably won't happen, even if the 777 can match the 747's range. It all has to do with capacity. Airlines equip their 777s with more or less 300 seats, and most airlines carry anywhere between 350-410 seats on their 747s. The 777-300 will probably never match the range of the 747-400, and even if it does happen, there will always be a market for the 747, so don't start worrying just yet.

I believe demand for the 747-400 has been decreasing. Boeing now builds a lot of freighters versions. Looking at the Boeing web site I see they have delivered 19 747-400s this year, out of which 12 are freighters. Last year 44 747s were delivered, 10 freighters (hope I am counting the table right). I am not sure how Airbus expects there to be great demand for the A3XX.

The 747 isn't going away anytime soon. The 777-200 was designed to fill the size gap between the 767 and 747. The 777-300 was developed as a replacement for aging 741's and 742's.

The 747 carries many more passengers than the 772 and the 773 doesn't have the range of the 744. Everyone's right...the 747 is here to stay.

Actually, the 777-300ER will have the range of a 744, but it will only carry 360 passengers.
