Big version: Width: 612 Height: 351 File size: 37kb

Fares in coach about 3,900 USD roundtrip...

Besides, www.aeromexico.jp is up and running.

Wow $4000 RT on AM. I bet you could buy a first class ticket on Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines from SFO or LAX for that price. I wanted to try this out but $4000 is a bit much for AM to NRT.

No, but it does say that there is a stop, which is most likely TIJ.

The Japanese website still very incomplete. Someone please, kindly explain to me why is it that AM, not even in their brand new site for Japan, has been able to update their info for " Clase Premier " and types of service and amenities available on the T7 ?

No, really, how do you expect to sell your product if you do not properly present it and promote it ?

Some of you out there might think of me as the renegade that is always bashing this airline, but Jesus !!!

Ok, this is the published full Y. Now, where are the promo fares ? This is a new flight that has to create awareness and presence. If they want to kick ass from the very beginning, they need to truly appeal to the public in an aggressive manner.

An overnight Pacific flight west to Japan is very unusual, all US and Canadian flights to Japan a day flights arriving in the afternoon. It must be the early afternoon departure slot they have? I thought the return was nonstop to Mexico City, The Tijuna stop was just going to Japan because of MEX altitude.

TIJ is an important industrial center with some demand to Japan, not to mention there is some feed at TIJ from other major Mexican cities like GDL and MTY (not sure what others but I am sure there are some).

Nonstop NRT-TIJ-NRT makes those other services easier.

If you look at the greater circle route between Mexico and Japan, Tijuana is a perfect stop over. The city is booming, has a good number of Japanese manufacturing plants and has a good middle and upper middle and wealthy class population who can support a flight along with cargo opportunities. San Diego-Tijuana is a growing dynamic bilingual region full of people with ties on both sides of the border. Sure,Tijuana is full of corruption and drug rings, but it is still doing very well. You learn to live with it.

Yup.

Here's a thought. People want to stay pissy about Miramar get some kind of bi-national agreement together for TJ airport and build the cross border terminal for International Service using TJ's runway. Merge all the airports in San Diego into one agency, level MCRD for new terminals (level the old ones on Harbor - maybe leave the newer terminal for Southwest) and direct freeway access, move Cargo to Miramar and kick GA out of Lindbergh and hope to God in 20 years LAAS makes Brown Field viable for complex curved approaches (so far this isn't the case based on FAA TERPS). All one can do is buy time out there.

Unfortunately, the extremely hot and high nature of MEX makes the route a stressful one for the 777 going Westbound.

It could be DONE, it can just be done better with a stop.

I am very positively surprised by this. I don't know how AM managed to get the NRT slots, but good job!

Something nobody has mentioned but I think would be a fantastic idea is for AM to place its code on NW's flights ex-NRT and for NW to place its code on the AM NRT flight. I am sure that AM and NW would be able to make some money from Asians interested in flying to TIJ and MEX, adding to the O&D pax of the route.

What do you guys think?

Eddiedude - AM-Mexico's government helped and was/were able to get NRT's slots justifying JL's 2 slots @ MEX which also is becoming slot restricted, or perhaps, it's already slot restricted airport. Just what AM should do with LHR/BA.

I believe you are very right Ghost.

Correct me if am wrong fellows, but I think this goes back a long way to the days of former president Luis Echeverría, who signed the first bilateral with Japan In 1972. Aeromexico was instructed to order two DC-10-30s in 1973
and to start making the necessary arrangements to operate a direct service to Tokyo. The original plan was to fly 3 x weekly MEX-LAP-HNL-TYO. JAL began scheduled operations on the TYO-ANC-YVR-MEX run in March 1972...Ahh, those very odd and glamorous days of the seventies !!!

The recently signed free trade agreement between the two countries, believe has paved the way to substantially broaden air communications on both directions.

The commitment between the two governments is well rooted. Mexico was the first country to open a consulate in Yokohama in 1890, thus recognizing in this manner the institutionalized government of Emperor Meiji. Japan established in Mexico City its first Latin American diplomatic representation in 1892.

Best regards

This is great news! I've been driving to TIJ from San Diego for 12 years. Cheaper flights to destinations that SAN servers and ones that it does not. 30 minutes to TIJ, 2 hours to LAX. I'll be sure to make use of this route. I used to fly SAN - PDX - NRT - BKK on Northwest. Now TIJ - NRT - BKK. Even better, 777 and a 330. I love that point to point and market fractionalization is really starting to work over the pacific.  bigthumbsup

The only limitation will be to have a passport to enter Japan. For the rest, it is actually easier than going to any other point in Mexico. Under Mexican immigration laws, US Citizens do not need a tourist card when entering Mexico through a border city unless they want to go more than 40km from the border. Therefore, you can cross the border using Otay and drive 2km's to TIJ airport. When you go to the check in counters, you will see the immigration stands which most of the times don't have immigration officers. If you run into one, you only say that you are leaving the country using AM's flight to Tokyo and he should let you go to check in. If your flight was to another city in Mexico, he should give you an immigration card to fill in and stamp your passport (it is always recommended to get the tourist card in the border either San Ysidro or Otay).

The TIJ stop is technical... there will be little San Diego traffic since there is no AM flight in the reverse direction.

If you check the replies above you can see that the routing is MEX-TIJ-NRT-TIJ-MEX, so there is a flight returning ... please read before posting...
Take a look at this reply...

Well, in that case, there are many other reasons why folks from the US side of the border will not use TIJ... it can take several hours to cross the border back into the US.

But rather than speculate, is there any data on how many TIJ passengers have US residence?

EZE service its supposed to be MEX-CUN-EZE, 2X weekly. Could be done with B767s, last I heard is that 02 B752s are staying till December 2007, then, they could start service with B757s later this year just as MX did. I think it would be great to have this service back, another possibility to reach EZE and fly the B752s!!

I think EZE is a must for AM. MX does wonderfully with their 6x weekly service and AM would do well to take advantage of AR's lack of long-haul planes (well, they have pretty much the same issue, but still I think something could be done).

Then again, LHR is also a destination that needs to be launched soon. I don't think that AM being a party to the agreements that refer to the relocation of SkyTeam to LHR T4 suggests that AM is indeed going to start flights to LHR, because in the end the issue is slot availability. However, I hope AM can lobby its way into slots. I think LHR would be a profitable destination.

If 2 752's are staying until Dec. 2007, and the arrival of the ex-RG birds 772ER's does not imply the retirement of two 767ER's, then maybe AM has a little room to grow their long-haul operations. While I don't think I would like to fly a narrowbody to EZE from CUN, I am sure most passengers won't care about it. In the end, the demand exists and, at the right fare, many people will take this flight without paying much attention to the spaciousness of the plane or the quality of the IFE.

I have two questions. One is if someone knows what AM has in store for 2007 with respect to South America. If I am not mistaken, AM promised a big South American expansion in 2007, so I am guessing we will see GIG and EZE, but hopefully more destinations too. The second is if FCO (and maybe BCN) is still in the radar or if the priority will be to expand NRT if the initial 2x weekly service proves profitable. Thanks.
