They stripped off the 'new' (or revised) colros and repainted them in the old colors, with the old titles.

The TAAG logo is now on the engine (737).

I guess I am the odd guy out for liking the old one better, as it truly stands out from the crowd.

IMHO ET made s serious mistaking in ditching its great classic livery and I am glad DT did not do the same. Their "old" one ages well and is truly timeless.

Why in hell would they do that. How much extra did it cost them to revert back to the old colour scheme?

Whatever Goodrich charges to repaint an airplane. It's like buying a new car. Taking it to a body shop and having it repainted.

If you produced as much oil as they do, you would not care about the additional cots for a paint job either, if you liked the old one better

The delay of their entry into service is caused by pilot training taking longer than expected rather than the repainting.

They probably listened to me!  bigthumbsup  But seriously, I slightly like the old livery better. I have to see how the 777 will look like (it looked great in the new c/s but I don't think that same livery fit their 737-700 as well). Meanwhile, their 732s do look so good in the old livery, and so will the 777.

Kinda like the new Kenya Airways, which is the other way around, looks great on the 737s but awful in the 777, in my opinion. Some of these 'modern' liveries can look better or worse depending on the aircraft.

Boeing can't train them on aircraft that are in the hanger being stripped and repainted.

This is the design is what we of Lila Design (http://www.liladesign.com) proposed to TAAG late 2005 but TAAG was already helped with a new design. Lila Design changed its TAAG proposal very recently in other colours and presents it now as a study model:

http://www.liladesign.com/images/UAAW-United-African-Airways.gif

The new TAAG livery (below) is propably a bonus by Boeing as part of the aircraft order. The new TAAG livery looks very promising but the old TAAG fuselage titles they added to this scheme is a very poor performance: unbalanced. What a pitty they harming that new livery design with it, not very professional i.m.o.

Nevertheless I think they painted one of the new Boeing 737s in the old TAAG colours (see far below) to use it for the hand over ceremony in November to put it next to a 737 in new colours to show the public that TAAG made an identity change...

I think they just axed the "new" livery, since it looks like the 777 is also being repainted. I like the new livery but the type on it is very weak, not just the old TAAG logo. I'm thankful that at least they're not using Arial, now that would be a nightmare.

Well, the Arial is not that bad if used properly but the Helvetica fonttype TAAG is using for 'Angola Airlines' is really outdated (well for aircraft paint designs).

The old Ethiopian scheme was one of the last beautiful "classic" timeless african liveries and foolishly, it was replaced by a very poor design. Fortunately we still have TAAG keeping that wonderful livery of theirs for some time.

Quoting OwlEye (Reply 18):

There's the concept of balance in design. If you used a thick arial or some funky looking font the whole thing would lose it's elegance. The original TAAG livery is made so the viewer focuses on the design. That was probably the reasoning behind leaving the ''TAAG" letters the same in the just scrapped look (but with the design being totally differen't it didnt work).

The 'angola airlines' letters are just the right size and font in the classic design. They by themselves don't have to look "modern" or anything, they're not the focus of attention, just there denoting where the airline is from. I personally wish more airlines would do this. Gives the plane an air of importance.

Now wearing classic colors the 737-700 looks sharp! The way the just abandoned scheme's color curved along the fuselage was out of harmony with the straight-edge triangular pattern on the tail. This was less obvious on the 777.

To be fair to Owleye (sorry if my comment was rude, I apologize) that concept looks cool, but has no elegance whatsoever that's what I was trying to say. I mean it takes a while to see what the fuselage design is, if you focus on the letters, you can't focus on the design which then just appears as patches of color. That livery looks more like a logojet (think of the Toronto Raptors A320, or the ANA A321 with that had photo fuselage stickers). It has creativity but lacks elegance and the colors are too strong. Also at first sight that Ram can seem like a woodpecker or some bird.. It looks too much like a cartoon.

I like how the 777 in the olive-green and orange looks a lot more. (it balances out the bold scheme with more calmed tones) Unfortunately, that same livery doesn't fit on the 737 well.

Great Job! and good decision TAAG for keeping the TIMELESS and BEAUTIFUL paintscheme.

So why did they change their colorscheme back to the old colors?!

If it was because of the titles that weren't big enough, this should have worked for them:

For those of you wondering why they had to revert back to the old scheme it was due to the airline not receiving permisision from the Angolan goverment to change the airlines scheme to the new one.

As they were not given permission, the aircraft will all now be painted in the airlines old colours.

I must admit the old colours does still look nice on the 73G  Smile

I'll respectfully disagree with you. Arial is made for a screen setting and should not be used for print, if you pay attention you'll see that the proportions and kerning are a fair bit off. Not to mention the design itself is awful. Helvetica is the workhorse of workhorses, surely not optimal but it will only look outdated if you let it - look at Ian Anderson's work for examples... and in the aviation industry, look no further than American Airlines.

(Sorry for the slight off-topic)

I couldn't disagree with you more. I consider the original Lila design proposal to be one of the most beautiful for any airline. Such a shame it wasn't adopted. The subsequent orange version looks wak and timid in comparison. Keep the bright colours Lila!

And the Kenyan livery looks horrendous no matter which aircraft it is on. Amateurish to the extreme, it's just awful.

Then again, all this goes to show how subjective livery tatses are from one person to the next.

Ummm, what?

Seriously, what's that got to do with anything? Just because I'm Kiwi doesn't mean I am in-love with all things Air NZ. If you were trying to score points by that little remark, I'm sorry but that's pretty lame. With AirTran, I was just trying to determine what sort of livery person you were. Personally I think the world can be divided into two groups - those who like AirTran's livery and those who don't, no matter what their nationality. I see now it is more nuanced than that.

But seriously (again), trying to shoot me down with a hit at NZ is pretty childish. As well as being a weak argument, if you look at my posting history, you'll see I'm a pretty fierce critic of Air NZ.

Back to TAAG, is it just the photo or is the red in the original scheme (as modelled by the 73G pic above) kind of faded compared to the new scheme? Looks like it's been sitting out in the sun for a while.

I noticed that too, it could be that the plane, since it's a bit backlit was overexposed a little on that photo, resulting in faded colors. Or maybe the editing..

oh wow that looks soooo good! I can imagine a side profile in good lighting. Gorgeous. This scheme is the best on a 777, in comparison the whitish Thai 777s there look bleached and just ugly.. Love how it looks on the 737 too.

Thanks for the pic American777. love how all the planes have the ID's checked. Slapped on top haha, pretty good spy job.
