Does anyone have any information about the new LAX check in policy that requires a passenger to check in 45min prior to a flight otherwise the airliners have a right to bump a passenger and place them on standby. I haven't found any information about this anywhere, but would like to know if this is something that is known that I was not aware of.

My girlfriend went to check into her northwest flight today, was in line 1 1/2 hours prior to departure but got to the counter with 43 minutes to spare and she was denied a boarding pass. She was allowed to go through security to reach the gate desk (which she claims she was at 25 minutes prior to departure) and she saw people start to board but was again denied boarding. Me thinks this actually IS NOT A LAX policy but a way for Northwest to try to keep full flights during high travel times. If this is the case she was involuntarly bumped and is eligable for compensation, (per congress report, I forgot the actual title of the policy though).

One of three things is going on, either
A. My gf is lying to me and really did get to the airport late...possible
B. Northwest is passing the buck to LAX and its really just thier policy...most likely
C. My gf is a terrorist, which explains her being denied boarding...and soooo much of our relationship!

Any insight....please help

Airports do not set policy for who can be bumped, Airlines do.

NW is lying to her, or she is lying to you. Or some from column A and some from column B.  Wink

To avoid such problems in the future, check in online...

At this moment in time, i would never get to an airport with only 1 1/2 to go before flt.

Id be there at least 2 2 1/2 hours before

It is NOT an LAX policy, but an airline-specific policy. Some airlines have check-in requirements for busier airports (virtually always including LAS and ATL) that are earlier than other most of the airline's other airports.

In Northwest's case, see

Domestic Flights: Passengers must be checked in at least 30 minutes and on-board at least 15 minutes before scheduled departure time for flights within the US. Exception: Check-in 45 minutes before departure in Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, Newark, Tampa and Washington D.C-Dulles and 60 minutes before departure in Las Vegas.
Important Note: Passengers not checked in by the designated times may have their pre-assigned seat assignment and reserved space canceled and will not be eligible for denied boarding compensation. Boarding passes may be obtained at check-in, a Northwest Airlines self-service check-in kiosk or any Northwest check-in position.

This is also included in the Contract of Carriage, and since she wasn't checked in 45 prior to departure, she isn't eligable for compensation.

Has nothing to do with LAX. Its actually airline policy with DOT approval.

Check out middle/bottom of page 61 of NWA Contract of Carriage

From the way I read section 1D, a 60 minute cutoff can be enforced by NWA at LAX.
