On 02DEC06, an ANA 767 flying from Haneda to Shonai (NH895) was hit by lightning 5 times with in 50 minutes when it entered Shonai Airport airspace, as it was prepared to land.

151 pax and 8 crews on board were safe.

3 black marks were clearly seen on the fuselage.

The 767 was circling above the airport as it tried to avoid strong wind.

That must have been one shocking experience, or rather five.

According to statistics, airplanes get hit by lightning once every year. This not only shows that they were rather unlucky on that flight, but also brings to mind a big question about the new generation CFRP airplanes. The metallic mesh they will be carrying, is designed to take the energy of the lightning and evaporate, leaving that part of the aircraft unprotected, until replaced. This means, in a case like this 767, the people on board a new CF made jetliner could be in serious trouble.

But lightning never strikes twice in the same place, Kaneporta1.

The translation of the report says the plane was circling Shonai waiting for winds to die down so I imagine it couldn't vacate the storm area.

Wow, I have been on board with one lightning strike, I can imagine that 5 together with the weather was not a fun ride for the pax.

That cannot be right since the metal mesh is imbeded in the cabon fiber layers. If the metal evaporates after a lightning strike, it would mean having to scrap the aircraft.

Those people were very unlucky! After the first one or two I would have got the hell out of the area!

It is not "embedded" in the layers, but as a screen that is the top-most layer in the lay-up. There are film adhesives that come with the metal screen to be used during repairs/fabrication.

We had a 767 take a couple of hits coming into MIA last summer, and it was a PIA to repair the damage to the aileron. It looks like someone set off a cherry bomb on the trailing edge. Airplane left 16 hours later after several repairs.

Now we know the type to fly with confidence in T-storms.!

Something not mentioned in the translation is that two holes the diameter of 1.5cm were found somewhere in the middle part of the fuselage.

Scary stuff - 5 strikes!

I was in a 747 over the Med when we flew into a T-Storm. We got hit at least 7 times over twenty minutes. Not something I enjoyed at all.

I was flying a King Air B100 a couple years ago and we got nailed by two strikes, one blew out a rivet in the bottom of the wing. Scared the hell out of us, but we were OK. As I recall, it was more of a big "pop" than anything else, it wasn't as violent as you might think.

Yeah, in that case, that's not really much of a safety standard. Another truth to the falacious saying "lightning never strikes the same thing/place twice." Of course, the Empire State Building comes to mind here, and now airplanes should also come to mind!

You are referring to the 787 and the new A350XWB with composite panels? I suspect the OEM's have given this some serious thought.
