I was wondering if Vietnam Airlines has ever, or will ever, fly to London, possibly from Hanoi?

I reckon there are a lot of british tourists who transit through Bangkok and Hong Kong on the way to Vietnam.

A 3/4 x weekly service using one of its A330s could work couldnt it?

I would think CDG would make a lot more sense since it was French-INdochina. I would also expect LAX, SJC and SFO as possibile destinations but it seems that to be a REAL airline you gotta have LHR.

VN is already serving CDG for long (from HAN and SGN)

Does VN serve any where in the US? Or will be in the foreseeable future?

No, they do not. However it was reported in Thanh Nien last week that they will introduce a US service in 2007. It reported that they are working on alliances with some US airlines (likely somewhat like BR has done.)

I fly IAH-SGN-IAH quite often & would like to have a better route. But in my experience VN is a mediocre airline at best. I'm sure they'll do well with a SGN-SFO/LAX service but only bec they'll have the only direct route.

Btw, there was some talk in VN a year or so ago that they'll make a stop in HKG. I have no idea if that's their intention.

So CO, DL, NW and US are not real airlines? And the same goes for AM, MX, LA and dozens of other world-class carriers?

I think he's speaking for some members that think that to be considered a decent carrier you have to serve LHR, as if to say that LGW isnt actually London...

It'll happen sometimes in 2007/2008.

Well LGW is the second airport and LHR is the main one but it doesnt mean the airlines bad. Just they cant get the LHR slots etc... I presume.

Vietnam Airlines have a sales office in London or a rep. Im sure they would fill a plane 3 x week as SGN is very popular with UK and Irish travellers these days. I think they want a US link more than a UK link for alot of reasons though.

The UK is not a mass market to or from Vietnam unlike Thailand, Hong Kong or China. There is however some tourism from the UK to Vietnam in addition to the sizeable Vietnamese community in London. Don't know if that's enough to warrant a commercial flight.

So is United Airlines (via HKG) the only US carrier flying to Vietnam?

They are as of now. As I understand it, the US-VN agreement doesn't allow a US carrier to pick up passengers outside the US. But UA negotiated an exception.

I've flown UA SGN-HKG-SGN a few times. It's great for a 1 day excursion to HKG from SGN. Leave early, return late.
