Hi Everyone,

Luckily enjoying a break in Teneife at the moment and was watching arrivals this afternoon into TFS from the poolside in the sunshine, when for a little over an hour maybe an aircraft flew a holding pattern around the TFS VOR. Other aircraft landed consistantly below it (Holding at 4000ft Maybe) From the distance where we are staying the shape was a 757 i´m pretty certain. Made me wonder if it was fuel dumping after takeoff to re land after a problem or did it maybe have a problem with its gear. Surely it wasn´t a training flight was it (thinking of fuel costs) Wonder if anyone had any knowledge of what happened and if there was a problem?

Did you see what airline, or at least what colour? There is a Thomsonfly B757-200 operated flight from Tenerife to Gatwick with quite a long delay, which probably wouldn't have been picked up at Gatwick as TOM had spare aircraft on remotes all day.

No, unfortunatley not, We are maybe 5 or 6 miles from the spot and the sun was directly behind the aircraft as it circled so the plane just looked dark in the sunlight.

I checked the TFS arrivals and there was a Condor 753 with a 362 minute delay from Frankfurt, maybe just a bad knock on, out of FRA?

Was TCX 757 to GLA- Birdstrike with significant nose cone damage- aircraft dumped and returned to TFS. Passengers put up in hotels.

If not dumped then burned off -as plane had to circle for a bit.

They can. Although it's not a common feature on Narrow Bodied aircraft such as A320 and B737, both of which don't have a Fuel Jettison system. I presume the 757 has this system because of the longer ranges it can fly that other Narrow Bodies simply can not. In the event of an emergency if your flying with MTOW and for the sake of argument an engine fails it would take a while until the Aircraft reached it's Maximum Landing Weight without a fuel dump. I don't have exact figures but I hope it sort of makes sense.

The 757 does not have a fuel dump system. It is able to land in theory at its maximum TOW but according to the procedures manual, shouldnt unless further delay to landing would endanger the passengers.
