Topic: What's Up With DL On SLC-ASE?

For the past day every single SLC-ASE flight on Delta Connection carrier SkyWest has been cancelled. I checked flights on other airlines such as UA and they are all going off. Anyone know what's going on here?

ASE has had weather which put it below minimums for several hours. Also, lots of snow has fallen there lately, which contaminated the runway. The plows at ASE could hardly keep up, let alone keep the runway clean.

ASE is a VERY special airport requiring special certification conditions for 121 carriers.

I realize that, but why exactly are other flights going off and DL's aren't?

Three of those listed are part 135 or 91 operators.

The DL flights were cancelled yesterday for WX at ASE. Today, stuck aircraft elsewhere.

EGE is down too. Every flight going there has diverted to a nearby airport. 3 AA's diverted to SLC. CO diverted to GJT. DL diverted to DEN.
NW1638 is circling right now...It's most likely going to divert.

Oh ok good. I get it now.

Nah, the plane scheduled to go to ASE came in from JAC, so I guess ASE really is in trouble.

My brother who was scheduled to go to ASE ended up going to MTJ.

it has been snowing here since friday...low ceilings, no visibility...it's not just DL.

Looking out the window now, looks like things are going to improve. Tell your brother to fly to EGE next time and take colorado mountain express, the weather is much less orographically influenced, plus the direct flight options are much better, not to mention the aircraft. Summer is usually ok, but winter, forget about it.

I also want to point out that while it might be possible to get in here IFR, as others mentioned above, ASE is very special, the approach pattern is very steep, and more importantly, if a missed approach is not executed correctly the plane ends up in the side of ajax.

The avjet crash here in 2001 occurred because the pilot went IFR and never aborted landing when he reached the visibility threshold, the crash was blamed on pilot error (pressure from his charter passengers to make it in town in time for a dinner party) and 18 people were killed. I would imagine that when skywest was certifying their planes into here last year they drove the point in that being alive is much more important than 40 people making it to their ski school lessons in the morning.
