Topic: Any Chance Sri Lankan Airlines Operating To MAN?

I was wondering if Sri Lankan Airlines ever considered operating a flight to Manchester from Colombo.

I can't imagine there being a huge amount of business travel between these destinations, but I'm sure there is quite a bit of leisure travel.

Perhaps a weekly A330?

Why would they?

London is the major Sinhalese/Tamil population centre. EK/EY/QR offer regular service & far more connections than UL now or ever could.

Unless UL came up with a charter deal for one of the package holiday co's for Maldive holidays, etc - I don't really see the point.

UL is a great airline, with a nice J product & great crew.

I could see it happenning eventually, though most passengers would probably be tourists which could mean low yields. And low yields dont mean profits. Would probably need some funding from the Sri Lankan tourist authorities

A few years ago they closed ZRH and concentrated on LHR, FRA and CDG. FRA and CDG don't bring lots of money but are more political. Especially Germany does have a big Sri Lankan communitiy. I don't think EK wants to see UL to expand again in Europe since they are doing well on all routes from Europe via DXB to CMB (and of course lots of other destinations).

UL were reported as saying that once they have secured twice daily flights to LHR then they would look at expanding elsewhere in the UK, mainly in to MAN. However, like the continuous reports of TG coming to MAN this has failed to materialise.

I read in a paper last year that UL were hoping to start MAN services at some stage in the future. I can't elaborate on that, because that's all I can remember.

In the same way that it's probably the biggest population centre for most national groups, but this doesn't discount anything. The Sinhalese/Tamil population in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds etc is growing, but I'm not sure whether numbers are large enough to attract significant VFR traffic as well as tourist/transfer and business traffic......yet.

MainMan,

If I remember rightly the article was in Airliner World and Sri Lankan were indeed quoted as saying that additional services to MAN and BHX were on the table. It was at least 2 years ago though and the direction may well have changed. That EK are seem to be doing exceptionally well from MAN and BHX at the moment, my guess would be that both will see a 3rd daily from them before Sri Lankan.
