Maybe not, but the first sentence of the linked article would have done it...  

"The FAA will reduce the size and simplify the geography of the Washington Air Defense Identification Zone cutting 1,200 square miles from the zone and removing 33 airports."

I have no idea what an ADIZ is, or what it does, but... hooray?

Too bad that image in the article doesn't zoom enough to be of any significant use. Anyone have a link to a more detailed depiction of it?

It seems as if it grew slightly due north of DCA in the "forehead" between the Mickey Mouse Ears, but it got rid of that huge security area Baltimore was getting, and to the west towards IAD is also free now. I could never understand what their reasoning was in protecting the Baltimore area as if it were as vital as the White House. Baltimore is no more vital than Philly, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Raleigh, or other cities of that size in that area.

Any shrinking of the unnecessary albatross of ADIZ is good news though. Great for the GA pilots in that region, and extending out to anyone within a Cessna's-range of the Chesapeake Bay region.

The Baltimore area is just one of the many TCAs in the United States. It is not nearly the same as an ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone). It is just to protect BWI airline traffic.

Methinks you've confused DCA with TCA, the former being an airport Tornado82 was using as a reference point, and the latter having been re-named "Class-B" airspace some years ago....

The (old) ADIZ was shaped like the Mickey Ears and included the Baltimore Area as well. It basically covered the entire Potomac Area Class B with some exceptions and wiggles.

My Cirrus is based at Leesburg (KJYO) so the change provides a little relief from the requirements needed to get an ADIZ clearance. We will still need, as I understand it thus far, to call an FSS to get a transponder squawk, and that is the part that can take the longest since you are sometimes on hold for an extended time waiting for a briefer. However, there will be some modifications to procedures to talk with Potomac Approach and there is some sort of a VFR corridor that is that little notch up there at the 11 o'clock position.

More details to work out and procedures to communicate to the pilot community before it goes into effect on 30 August.

Great decision! There was no purpose to the "Mickey Mouse" ears. The simplier configuration will reduce the number of violations and reduce bad publicity for GA.

Great news, of course now I don't fly in the DC area anymore... Oh well.
