So when is CX going to actually open up a new destination in North America? They keep adding frequencies to VYR, SFO, and JFK, but haven't added any new cities. I would have thought ORD would have been announced long ago. SEA would also be a good candidate.

Glad to hear the news about CX at JFK! It will be nice to have three different CX aircraft types at JFK...

Interesting times...I wonder if they will change the turnaround time of their other nonstop HKG-JFK flight. Any ideas why they're doing a ~14 hour turnaround for this one?

Once both non-stop JFK flights are up and running with 777s, the 3rd route for the new planes will be Toronto.

Not that it is a big deal... and not that anyone probably cares  Smile however I have a few comments about the HKG-JFK route on Cathay...

1) Why do they use 3 different types on this route... A346, B747 and B777
I would think that it would make crew scheduling a lot easier with the same type in case of an irregular operation.... and there are several other reasons including for example maintenance. If you operate 1 type into JFK you have to be covered for that type, now you need to be covered for 3.

2) Second issue is the departure times out of Hong Kong with all 3 flights leaving with 6 hours of each other and the last flight at 1635. Why no late flight allowing a full business day in HKG.

3) Specifically looking at the schedule of the 2 afternoon flights :
CX888 departs HKG at 1505 and arrives JFK at 1955 (via YVR)
CX840 departs HKG at 1645 and arrives JFK at 1845
why on earth would you take the 3pm flight (nearly 2 hours earlier) to arrive more than 1 hour later...

As I said... who cares... but I like to look closely at schedules and things like that...

This is just a guess on my part, but regarding the three plane types into JFK, as mentioned above, the A346 will be switched to another 77W and the 747 will continue on the one-stopper due to its advantage in cargo hauling between YVR-JFK.

Regarding the one-stopper leaving earlier and arriving later, perhaps it's a little cheaper than the non-stop. But I hear you on all 3 flights leaving close together and during the day time, but this probably has to do with departure schedules/banks at HKG and maybe for good connection times at JFK with AA.

I assume that the nonstop HKG-JFK flights will be geared towards Hong Kong-New York traffic while the one-stop HKG-YVR-JFK flight will focus mainly on HKG-YVR and YVR-JFK traffic.

Are ORD and YYZ the only two new destinations CX is considering in North America? It surprises me that they don't already fly to ORD and haven't been for years. That route seems like a no-brainer.

I dunno, it just seems like CX doesn't serve very many points in North America for an airline that is from such an important city/part of the world (HKG).

CX has been flying to YYZ for years!! ORD is the only new destination for now. Our main focus is to boost the routes which we currently fly. if you look at Asian airlines in the US, there are not all that many cities that have passenger services. CX already fly to most of the money-making routes possible and although one day I am sure they will fly to more cities, at the moment there are not all that many opportunities out there to profitably fill a non-stop widebody.

This is only the transition period. In a few years time, the plan is for EVERY SINGLE North American passenger flight by CX to be flown by the 777-300ER. Of course by then the 787-8 might be about so no doubt this plan will change.

Woops, you're right. Not sure how I forgot that but I guess my main question was about ORD and how CX has not entered that market. There is competition from US carriers there but from everything I have heard people in eastern Asia really like to stick with their own carriers. Plus CX's product is supposed to be fantastic. I would think this route would have been operating for years.

Which day is the extra PER weekly service, and when are the others?

This means that on one day, PER will have two HKG routes, as before CX had it the days that QF didn't fly the route.

The new service is a Sunday, so days to PER will be 1/3/5/6/7 at 2345, departing PER 0055 the following morning.

Qantas operates ex-PER days 1/3/5.
