Arik Chairman stated that the airline is interested in doing business with Airbus provided the pricing meets Arik's requirements. He added that Arik is looking at the area of Airbus assisting the airline on routes world wide routes.

Commenting on the meeting later, Sir Arumemi-Johnson said there has been no commitment yet on the part of Arik Air, but added that after further discussions, a decision will be made on whether to purchase the Boeing 747-800 or A380 for the airline’s planned large aircraft requirements.

In addition Arik appears to be talking about the A350XWB.

They certainly seem to have very ambitious goals - best of luck to them, somehow I think they'll be needing it, though I honestly think Nigeria deserves to finally have a successful airline with a modern fleet.

But the A380? Somehow, I do see this as a contest that's less Airbus' to win than Boeing's to lose... with B737NGs, B777s and B787s on order, the A380 - and the A350 - do seem somewhat strange to me.

Strange indeed, I'd have though the current fleet and the on-order fleet would suit just fine.

Whilst it would be nice so see another A380 operator, this one as a possibility is out of the blue to say the least!

I'm under the impression Sir Arumemi-Johnson and his partners are not so much interested in running an airline, but in spending stolen money as quick as possible. Beware that Arik Air is (still ?, although it has been very quiet on this issue lately) under investigation of the Nigerian economic crimes commission. Let's wait and see how this all evolves.

Talk about ambitious. Can they possibly fill all these planes and make a profit?? Seems like a page out of the EK book. In any event, the 748I can use any order it can get now.

Very strange indeed, I hope for an order for the 747-8I, I doubt they have a need for the A380 and with a big Boeing fleet it might make the most sense besides the 747-8I needs some orders. I am pretty confident that the A380 will be success and find its way to the airlines but I am still a little worried about the 747-8. Would be sad if the mighty 747 will only be flying as a freighter.

I severely doubt they have a need for either (how many premium seats would they have when compared with a BA or SQ?), but if you are going to splurge money on a trophy asset, then it has to be the A380!

Not starting an A vs B but I wouldnt find it sad, they 747 has had its time, the A380 hasnt, I would feel differntly if it were a 747 replacement

I disagree the 747 is a great looking aircraft and in my opinion more elegant I would find it sad to see it disappaer completely.

What is their largest aircraft now? A 737-700. Surely they should wait until their other large aircraft have been delivered and are bedded down before going down this road. Do Nigerian airports have the capacity and the facilities to deal with such large aircraft (even the ones now on order)?

I think that if Arik Air was to purchase 748i's they will become extremely successful.....

U see, the 748i has so little orders and due to the pure nature of airliners.netters, we will do whatever we can to get on a 748i, so Arik Air can become successful through this rather small population  Wink

Indeed. If this is true, this is madness, they should first get their act together on domestic routes and start some of their proposed long-haul flights.

Not in terms of terminal capacity. Lagos tends to be very crowded and chaotic in the evening (especially during the high season) and the facilities are barely sufficient to cope with the current amount of passengers, let alone if all the 787s and 777s on order by Arik come in. I don't think the taxiways can handle and A380, though I suspect EK might bring an A380 to LOS sooner or later.

Abuja is small. Once a week it handles two longhaul flights at the same time (a KL A332 and an LH A333) and again it gets very crowded, with frequent delays at security and immigration. Kano's airport is in a very sorry state, and I guess PHC won't be able to handle 500 + passengers at once.

Well,

Nigeria is the largest country in Africa, and there is a lot of growth in many countries on the continent. Nigeria is well suited as a stopover from Europe and the US to many other nations in Africa. If they had a stable government, I don't see why there is not a lot of room for growth.

That might be true but see how many people really have money to travel in Nigeria. On a side note: Largest country in what term??? Surely not size.

Until ArikAir is capable of competing against todays airline they will be far behind again. Sorry but Nigeria is not like India where airlines are expanding and rising like never before.

If they order the 380 or 748 I will have lost any remaining faith I had in them.

The only airline in Africa thta may need an A380 is SAA. Lagos is too close to London, Europe and New York with 7 hours flying time to warrant an A380. Smaller more frequent flights are better, not to menttion do the African airports even have the infrastructure for the beast.

If i is raw prestige, then it's going to be the A380-800.

However, with a heavy Boeing fleet already, Arik might be using the threat of an A380-800 purchase to beat Boeing down on the price of the 747-8I, which would be a change.

What is the range difference between the too aircraft? I hope Boeing will give their loyal partner a bomb deal on this order. I think Boeing should also build 1 747-8i before the freighters start so it can fly around the world as a demo platform to gain more sales.

Essentially identical at ~8000nm at nominal payload for each.

Population. Perhaps in oil reserves too... Ranks pretty well corruption-wise, but there is fierce competition in this domain on the continent!  Sad

This sounds like the base indeed for any economical improvement...

Another news story here:
http://allafrica.com/stories/200710151525.html

The airline will also build a hanger to hold aircraft such as the size of the A380 in May 2008.

Would love to see Boeing win this won seeing as Airbus won the BA order for VLA's last time around. Would love to see as many A380s/748s as possible around  Smile
